Time Machine in stuck loop

Time Machine OS X 10.6.6 mid-2010 27" iMac i7 stuck for quite a while now (~ 20min) "Calculating changes".

How the hay do I get it unstuck without damaging TM or my computer?

I'm really regretting upgrading to 10.6.6 – it has caused me all kinds of problems:
• slower startup than 10.6.4 (Tiger upgrades always got faster, not slower)
• Partitions sometimes not always mounted when starting up computer.
• etc.

Is it possible to go back to v 10.6.4 ???

Although these hints are for 10.5, they probably work in 10.6:

I'd use the 2nd hint - the stopping and starting the metadata indexing - as a first step, unless you can just stop Time Machine from the menu bar, that is.

Did you use the combo update when you updated to 10.6.6? Have you repaired permissions lately? Run Disk Warrior?

It finally got out of stuck gear a few minutes ago, after around 2 hours. Looks ok now.

It once again shows the backups on the TM disk, which were 'absent' until it finally got unstuck.

Edited @ 4:45 to add:

• I regularly correct permissions with DU
• I do maintenance routines using OnyX around 1/week
• I also run AppleJack around 1/month.

Using the latest versions of each.

I'm not really sure how long it takes SL to startup. I just have it do that automagically around the time I get up everyday...so I don't really ever see the actual startup. I have done a couple of Restarts in the last month but they didn't seem that long. dntknw.gif

Do you have several Startup Items? Are they all updated?

Even though OS X does a good job of preventing fragmentation, it certainly doesn't hurt to use a defrag app every couple of years...or maybe a couple of times a year...after a complete backup, of course. eek2.gif
