Good Evening Paddy,
I remember those days, so well. Reading to my children and encouraging them to read was a top priority when they were growing up.
I can remember seeing a faint light shining beneath the door to my daughter's room after bedtime. I would stand poised quietly outside the door, and then suddenly open the door to her room, only to find her holed up with her book under the covers, reading by flashlight. The good news is, all four of my children still have voracious appetites for reading, often read more than three books within a seven to ten day period and are more polished and accomplished because of reading.
In retrospect, I believe it was well worth the effort. Frankly, I enjoyed it as much as they did.
