A recurent problem whith Itunes...

Got all my mp3 in a folder and use drag and drop to itunes  from this folder, so they don't be imported in the library but are only aliases .
Found this more convenient to manage, but most of the time get "file couldd not be found  would you like to locate it" ,on some , even if they are in the mp3 folder.

Rebuilding the desktop get no exclamation mark on these files but as soon as try to play... could not be found etc ... Rebuilding the desktop get no exclamation mark on these files but as soon as try to play... could not be found  and exclamation mark.

So i'm obliged to re drag them to Itunes or locate them  very long process, than ereasing the duplicates ones, that works for a little time than the same problem...

Maybe there's something system related ...or?
 of that cause i  had also energy saver (wake up) not working or randomly even thashing prefrences

Why don't you just import them into the Library? You can keep copies in the other folder if you want. I don't see any advantage to keeping them separately, especially if you keep losing the link. Worth a try.

Also, I think there is a slightly more recent version of iTunes you can use - 2.04.

I did find people complaining about this issue back in 2002 - so it may be that this version of iTunes isn't as good as more recent versions running on OS X. We are, after all, talking about software that is now 10 years old and is up to version 10 now. One would HOPE that there have been some improvements!

Perhaps iTunes has changed since that version (maybe just a little!), but if I drag a song, at least an .aif, into iTunes, in is not an alias, it is there until I delete it. I can delete the original from my drive(s) and it remains in iTunes. It may be some settings I have, I don't know. But if you aren't deleting the stuff you've already put into iTunes and drag another copy in, it could easily get confused about which one to play. I suspect that dragging the same file into iTunes more than once is a great way to create duplicates?

On the other hand, if they really are aliases and you still have duplicates in iTunes AND you've rearranged the hierarchy on your folders holding the originals, it would be even more confusing to pick the correct file to play; the alias, the one that is now in a different location, the one last dragged in, etc.

At any rate, once a file is imported into iTunes, you can create as many 'playlists' as you want without making duplicates in the iTunes Library, as far as I know. Of course, what I know of iTunes is extremely limited...especially what that version did with files.

When you delete a file in iTunes, how do you do it? Do you get any dialog asking for confirmation?

I was wrong, i'm using Itunes  2.0.4...


I use this  method  cause when importing files ,  the library is in a compacted format, ans it's easier to see the mp3 files and  names in the folder.

Remember trying to import but  had the mac freezing at half oft the import ( about 2500 mp3)

To delete i first ask Show song file,  trashed it than delete the  named file in Itunes

Actually  the itunes library is 2,3 Mb,  i don't know why  it's called Itunes library(2)  got also in the same folder three Itunes temp, (1,2 ) should i delete them they are the same size as the libray

The mp3 folder where all the files are is 14,28 GB

What about  Convert id3 tags   in the advanced Itunes menu

ASCII to ISO latin 1
ISO Latin 1 to ASCII
Reverse Unicode

ID3 Tag version
v1
v1,1
v2,2
v2,3

Don't know what action to choose ? maybe can  do something for my problem?

I don't think that converting the id3 tags would do anything at all to solve your problem.
