Safari “Clear History” selection
« on: March 03, 2011, 10:20:58 AM »
iMac Intel i3 21.5” OS 10.6.6, Safari 5.0.3

Why is it that when I “Clear History”, and I visit a site, the same first 5 entries keep showing even though I have not visited these sites. See attachment.

[attachment=2152:Picture_1.jpg]

This has been going for quite a while, much before the last few Safari updates.
Is there a way to prevent the 4 “oryte” and the “game” sites from showing up
in the History list? This does not happen with Firefox 3.6.2.

Absent a better answer, you could always enable Private Browsing via the Safari menu.

I'm not sure, JB - but have you tried the suggestions listed here:

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1044/safari...ch-box-history/

Are you saying you've cleared the history and just gone to one other site, yet five previous sites are showing up if you click on the History tab?

You don't have parental controls turned on, do you?

What are you using as your home page?
What page/site do you have in view when you clear the cache?
Do you have any extensions installed?

jchuzi. - But then Safari does not remember where I went, and sometimes I want to go back where I have been.

Paddy. - The Web page shows how to clear the Google Search Box. It does not refer to Safari’s HIistory.
      - And yes the 5 addresses I talked about come back into the History list as soon as I visit another page.
      - Where do we turn on/off parental controls?

XABD.  - My Home page is a blank page.
      - I don’t know. It could be any page at the moment I clear the History.
      - No extensions are installed, and the Extensions Selector is set to Off.

Blank page is fine, but you really ought to make one for yourself, HTML for such a thing is dead easy. And you can put links to anything you want on there.

Any page/site that is open will automatically repopulate the list, I would think. Especially if it is refreshed or it has Flash that may be calling for 'stuff' behind the scenes. I suppose javascript could be doing that also. dntknw.gif By, I assume you are getting those same sites logged no matter what site you might be viewing, correct?

No extensions is fine also. You might try disabling javascript, Java, cookies and pop-up windows and see if any of that makes a difference. Those are all in the Security tab, BTW. dntknw.gif And you haven't said anything about Internet plug-ins...got any? Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-ins and also your home folder/Library/Internet Plug-ins.

I assume Paddy is talking about the Parental controls in the System Preferences ->Accounts area.

I assume you've tried moving/renaming the three Safari .plist files in your home folder/Library/Preferences? And, of course, your home folder/Library/Safari/History.plist

Finally, does this same problem occur when logged in to a different account?

Thanks XABD. No matter what I try, these 5 History entries keep coming back. So I’ll live with them.

You're not the only one with this problem.  Dick (RHPConsult) emailed me a few weeks ago about a similar situation where a particular site is always listed first in his History no matter what he does.  I couldn't offer much beyond emptying cache, manually removing sites from History (change option in Prefs), etc. and I don't know if he still has the problem.  Thinking.gif

Well, the "History" file is simply another plist/XML file. But it's probably one of the most often written to/changed plist file on your drive. It gets changed almost every time you visit another site. And there is also a "HistoryIndex.sk" file in the same folder. With this problem, myself, I'd Quit Safari, move the History.plist file to the desktop and restart Safari. Open the History menu. If the same sites are still listed, I might consider deleting the whole Safari folder in my user/Library and also the app itself. If those same sites keep appearing in the list, something is putting them there and it's not Safari.

XABD. I removed everything that had the word Ssfari in it, Application and all. Reinstalled Safari and sure enough
the same History entries came back. I guess, as you say, something is putting them there and it's not Safari.
Is there such a thing as a Sfari uninstaller?

OK, but did you log into another account and run Safari? If there is "something" putting those sites in the History list, we need to figure out if it is (they are) in your account or in generic System area. You really need to have a basic, no third-party (non-Apple) software, no startup items, etc. installed account for testing things like this. I'm still not clear about your having done this action.

There is no "Safari" un-installer, that I know of. It is simply a drag-to-the-trash app. But, as tacit mentions in another thread. The core of the app is built-in with the OS. And other apps, essentially those that use html (type) display often use those capabilities. So, you can't delete that stuff even if you knew the multitudes of solutions to the problems that might create.
