Hardware support of Classic on new machines.

My dad's workplace is considering purchasing a new Mac (I suggested maybe they ought to hold out for the new G5's - but not sure on that as far as they're concerned).

One big issue is that obviously, as have many run into, he has a good deal of Classic (if not ALL) applications.

He's running the Adobe suite, Quark and MS Office.

I know that there have been threads here about the drop of Classic support in the newer Macs (not able to install Classic at all).

Can someone please tell me where the cutoff for this was and what hardware was the last to be supporting a Classic / X partitioning scheme?

Chris, I do not use the Adobe suite or Quark, so it is best if others comment.

Re MS Office, my experience is that it works just fine. I suppose there are, or may, be issues depending on the version of Office that your dad is using. I used, without problem, Office v2001 until Office X was released. Office X is significantly better (IMNHO). In the upgrade from v2001 to Office X, I experienced few, if any, problems with Word, Excel, and Power Point. I don't use Entourage, so again, no first hand experience. But from the number of posts on MFI and elsewhere, that seems to be the weak link in that package.

Classic support was not dropped. Just classic booting doesn't work anymore.

I am using Quark 3.3 in classic mode once in a while.
It has some small bugs, but overall works fine.

Can't say anything about the other two apps.

If they don't want to buy new software they should get the latest G4s.

These newest versions support Booting into OS 9.x

Like it was mentioned, Classic is similar to OS 9.x emulation.

Works for some things well but not others.

i'd hate to run a business under it.

To get the G5s they'd really need the OS X versions of that Software IMO.
