Need help making transition to new computer
« on: June 24, 2003, 11:08:11 PM »
Currently have G4 733 running 9.2.2.  Don't touch X!!! Since I decided to gt a new computer and figure G5 is the way to go (considered G4 which boots from 9 and X) I am going to boot from X,install Jaguar, which I still have in a sealed box) and use it for a while so I can make a transition to the new system. My questions are as follows:
1) Are 9 and X currently on separate partitions- were they installed that way - and does it matter?
2)  When I want to transfer my files (I can use my external firewire which I use as a clone), how do I transfer only X and not 9, and what about things like preferences and extensions and who knows what else, which may be stored in folders in OS9?
3)  If I install Jaguar, will I be screwing things up by transferring everything since I read that Jaguar is configured differently on the new computers?
4)  Do I need to know in advance which of my apps need updating for X or will I figure that out when nothing works?
5) If a number of my programs can only be run in classic, will they transfer over easily or is it better to reinstall and update?

And finally - is there a site which lists INCOMPATIBLE perpherals and software for X?

Now that I've given everyone here an evening's work, I thank you in advance.  Leslie thanx.gif

Leslie. First. This may be of interest to you. smile.gif

Apple Store Power Mac G5 buyers get 'Pro Card'

"Given to consumers who buy the G5, the Apple Store Pro Card enables users to make an appointment with a Mac Genius to have their files transferred to their new G5".

Newer machines that come with OS X are not Partitioned.

You can back up your stuff, Partition, and Install OS X in a Partition, or not.

It will work either way.

To transfer OS X stuff you can't beat Carbon Copy Cloner.

If you're talking about your present machine.

Many Apps will run in Classic. For those that don't Boot into OS 9.

No site lists what isn't compatible that I know of per se.

What are you asking about? smile.gif

Personally, I am going to burn my stuff on CDs and transfer them that way.

Network would be okay, too, but that way I'll also have a backup of my files. And it's always good to have a new backup.

Networking between OS 9 and OS X is really simple. However, if I was you I'd connect from the G4 to the G5 and not the other way around. I feel that OS 9's AppleTalk networking is more comfortable than OS X's.
