Connecting Macbook Pro to TV
« on: August 05, 2011, 07:58:27 PM »
I have tried to connect my Macbook Pro to my Panasonic Viera Plasma TV. I used the HDMI port in the back to connect with a HDMI cable to a Mini  adaptor to the Mac. I tried to use the System Preferences and in the Displays panel and it doesn't recognize the TV. Nothing works. I contacted Apple and they said it was a problem with the HDMI ports on the TV. Panasonic said that the TV wasn't made specifically to connect with a computer and had no other advice. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Not what you might want to hear, but almost any other type connection will probably work. HDMI is a highly regulated (by the video creation companies) and is not made for "the rest of us." Fortunately, most modern TVs have several different input connections. smile.gif
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

This adapter cable:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A  and a standard VGA cable does the trick just fine. Have used this set up for both the in house Samsung tv and  LCD projectors

Depends on the adaptor you can get for the mini and what's on the TV. <mini to DVI>, mini to VGA (<This one may not connect to your mini, if it's a new one>), mini to Component, etc. dntknw.gif

The "Standard VGA" Cable is what, a male to male or male to female?

May I suggest getting the input types for the TV from the owners manual and the output type from the mini and then searching for those as in; "abc to xyz cables". The brand of computer and TV are irrelevant. As for 'VGA' cables, I suspect they will bee the same gender on each end just as the gender on the TV or an adaptor will be, only the opposite one. The cables will probably be male, the 'input' jack(s, even on an adaptor for the computer) will be female.

Agree what he says.
Male-Male, on  the numerous LCD projectors and 2 televisions experienced.  Don't recall ever seeing a male connector on any of the LCD's or TV's.   You should be able to just look at the back of the tv (or the side) wherever the ( computer/pc) connection is located. I would wager it is female.
