Byte the bullet

Opened the latest TidBITS newsletter <on-line version> and saw an article titled "Converting Email [what else?]from Eudora..." I made a comment about some still using other very old software and I know of one lady who only recently switched to Mail. But what struck me about the article (and I certainly haven't read the entire thing) was the size of it! Mainly because of the precautions needed, the formats available and the destination possibilities. I have no idea of what kind of time might be required to make the conversion(s) but I hope it is somewhat less than the time it took to compile the info for the story! eek2.gif And thanks to Lion Tweak, I can see that the article consumes easily 75% of the whole message!

My point is only that relying on out-of-date apps is going to cause some serious time consumption sooner or later. We all have favorite apps and even OS's, but if you think there is a chance that you'll still be using the out-of-print stuff for another five or six years, I highly recommend some thorough study of what's available that can do what those old apps do. In the blink of a lightening flash, you may find yourself without a machine that even works, much less one that can run those apps! That will no only be a sad day. That will be the start of possibly many sad weeks...and then there will be the loss of all that work!

Of course, added to the challenge of finding new apps will be the forgetting of old habits for using them while learning new ways to do the same thing. The only upside is that you will definitely learn that the new apps can do everything the old ones did but so much more! clap.gif

And I understand there are sometimes reasons we can't always have the latest/greatest, but it seems like a good idea to have some options in mind when we finally have to make a choice...especially if it's a choice we'd rather not make.
