OS 10.7 Dock
« on: September 14, 2011, 08:21:01 AM »
iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.7.1

Even though I gave up on a previous post about opening Lion, I still intend to continue to learn about taming the new cat.

Why is there a space in the Dock. I know about the "dotted" line at the left of the Trash can.
I am referring to the empty space, in this case between the Mail and the Safari apps. See attachment.

What happens if you click or hover over the space? What happens if you drag something else into the Dock? Have you tried deleting the Dock .plist file?

Thanks Paddy.

Trashing the Dock .plist file and restarttng fixed the problem?

I should have done that before posting!! I'm getting so skeptical about 10.7 that I'm loosing my cool and forget
the few basic things we all know about.

I've been running 10.7 on my MacBook Pro since shortly after it was released, and have had no major - or even minor problems, other than it seems to gobble memory like there is no tomorrow. My MBP is getting a little long in the tooth now (4.5 years) and it only takes 4GB, of which only 3.3 or something is used. I had 2 GB and it was like molasses in January. The upgrade to 4GB helped somewhat. I haven't moved to Lion yet on this Mac Pro - there are a couple of things I use on it that aren't ready for Lion yet, including my EyeOne software. It's supposed to be ready this month and then I'll probably make the leap, though will keep a full backup with SL on one of my internal drives in case there are issues. The things that bugged me, such as the reverse scrolling, user Library not visible etc., I fixed immediately.

I don't consider that space a problem, at all. There is a method for placing those anywhere you want that I used in Snow Leopard. In Lion, I simply downloaded some 'fake' apps that provide a little more definition than a simple space. These <little icons> were designs by very talented graphics guy but I suspect it would be an interesting project for anyone interested in playing with pixels. The things are actually extremely complicated and highly technical applications created in AppleScript. The actual script has one command/word in it; "Quit" laughhard.gif But AS kindly creates all the other stuff that helps to allow the Dock (and the OS) to treat it like any other application and it is eagerly accepted into the Dock, no questions asked! clap.gif

Other designs are available at the above link, of course.

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
