Even after deleting and reinstalling it, Google Chrome will not launch any more. On the last install and launch attempt, the crash report said it crashed on Thread 26. When I tried a second time the crash happened on Thread 24. A third attempt says it crashed on Thread 26 again.

Does anyone know what might be causing the crash at launch?

I searched the interwebs and found nothing that fit this particular problem.

Even though you uninstalled it, some of its preferences and/or caches might have remained. Look in ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Caches and delete the related files. Relaunch Google Chrome and see if that helps.

I uninstalled GC a long time ago but, as it turns out, I have a leftover Google folder in ~/Library/Application Support. Within that folder is a Chrome folder. If you have the same situation, move the Chrome folder to a safe location and relaunch GC. If the problem is solved, trash the bad boy (or experiment with its contents). If not, put it back.

Um...not sure which search terms you used, Bruce, but I found these solutions in less than 2 minutes. wink.gif (I searched on "Google Chrome crashing + thread 26" - the "thread 26" part didn't really help the search except by limiting it to Mac-related crashes. "chrome crashing on startup Mac" was equally effective)

Not sure what this keystone registration thing is, but deleting it worked for several people. wink.gif

(delete Chrome's pref file, which I was going to suggest anyway)

BTW - Chrome 14 came out on Friday. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4828/google-...-stable-channel

Thanks for your replies!

I did find many discussions about Chrome crashing before posting here. And… I have tried all the suggestions and then some to no avail.

Yesterday, I used some command lines in Terminal to locate and delete everything related to Chrome. I just now went through my computer looking for anything and found nothing. I downloaded and installed the latest version and it crashed on launch.

I don't understand it but it doesn't matter. I use Safari and Firefox. I don't need Chrome. wacko.gif

Okay, I just tried one more thing. I logged in as my wife and Chrome launched and ran like a brand new application, just as it should. That tells me I haven't found everything that needs to be deleted on my login.

It's not high on my priority list, so I'll try again when I get some time to mess around.

Sorry, Bruce - when I read your first post, it sounded like you hadn't been able to find any solutions online, much less try them. Just as a general bit of advice to all - when posting a new problem, please tell us exactly what you've already tried. It saves everyone time. wink.gif

As you've concluded, there is definitely something on your account that is messing things up.

Have you checked the user->Library->Application support->Google folder? Look for anything "google" as well as "chrome." How about the preferences?  (user)/Library/Preferences/com.google.Chrome.plist?

This is a great question,,,,,,
Those apps to get rid of all stuff associated with something that you want to get rid of entirely look good.

What I need to know, is after you have dragged something like Chrome to the trash, will these apps go in and find the stuff in Library>App support>whatever that you need to get rid of.
Sort of after the fact?
Im not good at this, so I need to study what you are using to do this. Ive not had this problem yet, but you never know when it will happen.
Thanks,
Jane

Okay, this is weird. I looked in my user folder and wife's user folder and neither have a Library Folder. Maybe I've forgotten how to locate it but I don't think so.

Are you using Lion?

In Lion, the user's Library folder has been made invisible - I guess to stop people who don't know what they're doing from mucking around with it. A nuisance, if you ask me, but easily fixed. Either download Lion Tweaks which has lots of Lion adjustments in a nice little UI:

OR simply go into Terminal and type:

chflags nohidden /Users/[username]/Library/ - substituting your own user name, without the brackets, of course.

You can probably confirm for suspicions that you have something in your user account that is the cause of your problems with Chrome. Just retort while holding down the shift key. You'll by-pass most anything NON-Apple on that startup. If Chrome works after that start up, you'll need to look through the things you have running 'normally.'

First, take a screen-shot of the items in the Startup Items Pref Panel (I know, you could write them down on that usually white stuff, 'paper," I think it's called, but then you'd also have to fond something to write with!). Second, assuming you don't have more than a few dozen(!) Startup Items, you can easily select a few at a time that you can live without for a few minutes, click the minus button and then do a normal Restart and give Chrome a shot.

I suspect that you'll find one, particular item that does not play well with Chrome (or vice versa). Then it may be a simple matter of updating that item, visiting that site with Safari or FF, of course! wink.gif OTOH, it might make your wife feel more needed if you ask her to do any surfing with Chrome!! You could call her your Chrome Expert! clap.gif

Would that be "restart", Jim? wink.gif Somehow, I don't think even a clever "retort" will quite do it. biggrin.gif

I'm just heading off to bed but, yes, I'm running Lion. I downloaded Lion Tweaks to make the user Library Folder visible and trashed all the Chrome stuff.

Apparently, there is something else in going on as Jim suggests. I launched Chrome and the new start window with the choices for search engines showed as it should. Then just as quickly, it crashed.

I really don't know why I keep messing with it but it just bugs me when something isn't working right on my computer, or anything else I have for that matter.

Not tonight however… my lovely wife is awaiting my presence in the bedroom. (to sleep) tongue.gif
