font issue with MS Word 2008, solved
« on: March 13, 2012, 03:07:30 PM »
In case anyone comes across this:

I use MS Word 2008 and created a document with a recipe entitled Zimne Nogi (pig knuckles, in Polish). I saved and printed the document but my wife wanted me to be authentic so I changed the Z to Ź in order to have the correct Polish spelling. Yesterday, I made several changes to the document, saved the changes, and printed them. Today, my wife wanted more copies but my changes had not been saved.

Naturally, this was very upsetting. I retyped the changes, printed copies, and quit Word. To see if everything was OK, I looked at the recipe with Quick Look and, again, the changes had not been saved. My Time Machine backup also lacked the changes.

On the basis of the KISS principle of troubleshooting (Keep It Simple, Stupid), I changed the Ź back to Z, entered the changes, and all was well.

To be totally accurate, I had also renamed the label of the document with a Ź so I changed that back to Z as well. So, I don't know which one (the Ź in the document or the Ź in the label) was responsible, but I don't feel like futzing around to find out.

Maybe this will help someone in a similar situation.

I don't know about Word, but some word processors aren't compatible with all character coding systems. But if the OS can display the version of a character you want, I'd also assume it would mean the actual character code is saved in the document. Some apps have a pref setting that allows you to use UTF character codes rather than the much more limited ASCII codes. You might check the prefs for something like that. Of course, the font selection is important, but if you're seeing (and printing) the character you want, there is something smelly in Denmark (or where ever M$ codes Word)! Then, Microsoft is famous for doing things a little differently han the rest of the world...laughhard.gif I suppose you've searched the interwebs about this phenomenon? Thinking.gif dntknw.gif

Now, I'm a little confused about how you can call this problem "solved." Thinking.gif I guess you mean that knowing it can't be done, you've stopped trying? laughhard.gif That seems to work in some marriages, of course... scram.gif

Great reply, Jim. I haven't searched the internet yet but when my 3 cats allow me some time, I may give it a go. I'll also be experimenting with the document label as opposed to characters embedded in the actual document (I'll post back after I do this). As far as I can tell, MS Word has no preference setting for UTF characters.

I guess that "solved" isn't quite the right word. "Gave up" is probably more accurate. I have more pressing things to do with my time than to worry about whether or not a Z has an accent. As to my marriage...

As far as I'm concerned, "I give up" is synonymous with "Solved!" laughhard.gif

Not having enough to do, I performed a rudimentary search and found a few possible useful links, of course, they almost all says there's nothing to this task...so the problem is obviously at the keyboard user in front of your computer. tongue.gif

You can select a foreign keyboard layout by selecting one in the Keyboard control panel. Be aware that if you select the German layout, Y and Z are reversed according to U.S. layouts! This is a good cultural lesson, though: learn to type the way the Germans do. Umlaut letters are typed quickly and easily with one keystroke.

Frankly, only that last site offered any suggestions about a "Ź", all the others concentrated on vowels. wallbash.gif

I already know how to get Ź by using Character Viewer. Apparently, this is in Unicode: U+0179 or Hexadecimal: 0x179 or Decimal: 37, whatever those things are. There is no keyboard combo that can type it, at least with a US keyboard. It is, of course, available with a Polish keyboard but I used Character Viewer.

I'll have to try this with the Polish keyboard to see what happens. My curiosity has been piqued.  Thinking.gif

Hi John,

I use POPChar for special letters/symbols.  However, I tried to print your Z with the accent and all I got was a long dash.

The Z with the accent was in the list of characters, but alas NO LUCK.

Interesting. I was able to print it after using Character Viewer. Which word processing program are you using? MS Word 2008 can handle the printing part of it but maybe another program can't.

"Great minds?" I thought about PopChar just this morning, also. The problem with it is making sure you have the correct font selected in it and the app. While it is relatively easy to change the font in PopChar, I don't think it can always over-ride the one in the other app. Or It may be the way I have it set up or the app that I often use that is not Unicode capable. Or it may be that Sun tornado thing... eek2.gif
