What's not to like about the new iPad from the LATimes!
« on: March 26, 2012, 08:45:08 AM »
People don't like not having a full Siri on the new iPad!

People don't like that it's heavier!

And as already noted at TS and other places, hotter to handle and easier to break!

There are other things here:

Wow...nitpickers 'r' us! About the only complaint with real validity/impact (if in fact it IS a major issue) is the last one, "wiggy wi-fi."

I mean really...if you drop your iPad from waist height onto a hard surface, it breaks? And it breaks more than the iPad2 did? Well golly gee... rolleyes.gif

*note: not an iPad (look at the last bit, when you can see the back and the lower edge. wink.gif ) - probably one of those imitators with special, er, kitchen features. toothgrin.gif

Siri is still in beta, AFAIK. And it's purely software, I think, so it should be dead simple to add. dntknw.gif

Heavier? Can the average blind-folded person tell by holding one? And, without Siri, can that person do anything with either one...without taking their blind-fold off, that is?

Hotter? OK, don't run extreme games in broad daylight in the Summer. Come on, it's got four cpus! What do you expect?

Oh, yeah.

My parents got me an iPad 3 for my birthday. Honestly, I am constantly surprised by how heavy it is. It's heavy enough that using it one-handed gets tiring; it's a *lot* heavier than the iPad 2.

Almost all the weight is battery; something like 80% of the iPad's space by volume is battery.

Well, Franklin, if it's just too darn heavy, you can mail it to me. I'm pretty sure that I'll find a way to cope with the extra weight, as onerous a task as that may be. toothgrin.gif

Solution: Become ambidextrous! That way, you can alternate the holding hand and still maintain your typing speed! Besides, you need the exercise!!! laughhard.gif BTW, "volume" does not always equal "mass." wink.gif Just remember, even though the Moon is smaller than the Earth, it is still further away! Learned that in grade school! yes.gif Or maybe Mad Magazine. I'm jist sayin'

I'm more concerned about the fact that the battery life seems to be lower  sad.gif

As regards Siri..

Meh....

It appears to have problems with non US voices never mind my Scottish accent.

As for my Scottish accent in French...... Well your guess is as good as mine

I can imagine what it could make of a old Irish friend of my wife's; he was practically incomprehensible to me!

Well the Battery Life issue doesn't seem to be overblown to me. The new iPad has a battery life significantly lower than the iPad 2. I guess that it's the price you have to pay for new technology. My trusty old Nokia 6310i lasted about a week between charges. All the smartphones I have seen/used need re-charging every day  sad.gif

More or less. I only use my iPhone for 'phone calls, SMS and listening to a few podcasts in bed. To be honest the iPhone is not particularly good as a phone. I get a load of dropped calls and not great reception. The main reason I got it was for the great deal offered by 3 my network provider. They are a 3G only network so a smartphone is obligatory

Well, I don't use SMS (have it blocked/removed from my service) don't do podcasts on it, either. When I go to bed I try to sleep! laughhard.gif And the computer screen is so much better for any kind of vid and it's external speakers have vastly better sound. But I do like to check the weather radar and do a little emailing. I mainly stay away from WiFi and get a days use. Of course, mine is a pre-state of the art 3G model, newer ones probably have more battery draining functions.

If you have 3 network providers, surely one has better coverage than another. dntknw.gif I'm on AT&T and they are fine while driving around town but not too good at home. OTOH, I don't use the iPhone at home, that's what the landline is for (works even when the cell tower gets blown down by a tornado!). wink.gif And 911 works as it should, providing the exact location automatically.

But Apple's planned obsolescence by improving the iOS (what was wrong with OS 7?!) and claiming iCloud can only work for newer models and the occasional "No SIM card installed" eek2.gif warning may force me to et a newer model one of these days...

Sorry Jim, I didn't make it clear. "3" IS my network provider.

My own, but obviously somewhat limited tests still show that the iPhone performs worst as a 'phone. With the help of a friend I tested 3 old style "Dumbphones", a Blackberry, a ZTE Blade, and an iPhone 3GS using 4 different SIM cards at home. The results for signal reception were
1) Nokia 6310i
2) Nokia 6021 = Motorola L2
3) ZTE Blade
4) Blackberry (I can't remember the model right now)
5) iPhone 3GS

I should point out that some of the networks were better than others. That's why I plan on changing when my SIM only contract runs out later this year. I have discovered another company who offer almost the same deal but who use a mixed 2G/3G network.
