1st gen iPod touch problem

Just about a week ago while at my father-in-laws I tried to download my mail from my .mac (or whatever it is called now) account.  It gave me an error message saying that either my username or password was incorrect.  I just figured it had something to do with my FIL's router and I would just try it again later.  SO I got home and no joy again with the same message.  I used my MacBook and had no problems.  I went to iCloud and was able to log in no problem using the same username and password that the iPod is set up for. It seems that I have no problems anywhere else except the iPod.  I have gone into settings and re-entered the information and I know that it is correct - again no joy.  I reformatted the iPod and entered the new settings from scratch and the problem persists.  I know that the iPod is considered old but I use it all the time for email updates. I just need it to work again.  Any ideas?

First you mention DotMac and then iCloud. While you can force older models of iPhones/iPods/Macs to use the iCloud services, email is one of the least reliable. I have iCal syncing beautifully, but email seems to have stopped working on my older iPhone. Apple has said it does not support these older hardware items on iCloud. Our continued use of them will probably never be reliable/trouble-free/enjoyable. It's called "progress." Frankly, I sometimes get password requests from Mail on my iMac after attempting to access it on the old iPhone. I have, basically, given up email on the iPhone via iCloud even though it is basically just an IMAP server. It obviously is sending hardware info that the iCloud servers don't understand and possibly even block. These are just my anecdotal experiences and personal opinions but I read of similar stories. And I don't have an iPod with which to test/use/experiment.

That is kinda what I thought is happening.  I guess I will have to just update at some point.

I have some things you can try at <"Setting up a non-iOS 5 device for iCloud Mail"> that may help. The gotcha may be the server name; some add the "p-0x" part, others say it's not needed and can even change. Right now, my iPhone simply has "imap.mail.me.com" for the incoming mail server name, but, as I said, it's not working. The SMTP server name (smtp.mail.com) works fine, however. Frankly, I don't want to mess with it that much as I had severe problems with Mail on the iMac constantly asking for my password a few months ago. Only solved by deleting the account and setting it up manually as a plain-jane IMAP account.
