Mac OS X 10.3, aka Panther, will not be a 64-bit operating system, despite running on a 64-bit processor, the PowerPC 970 aka the G5.

No. It will not be only a 64 Bit OS. smile.gif

It's setup to run either way.

I don't see any alternative to this, do you? smile.gif

It's a classic industry conundrum: balancing the need to pull users forward to gain the benefit of new or more advanced technology with the damage that can be done by forcing an unwilling migration.

Why would they (apple) change strides from their past record of moving forward and chucking the past as old news/hardware,software.?. smile.gif

You mean like keeping Classic around for years? smile.gif

And selling new G4s that Boot OS 9.x? smile.gif

"t shouldn't come as a big surprise that Apple hasn't completely re-tooled Panther for 64-bit processors. Considering the fact that 32-bit chips will likely be in it's product lineup for many years to come and the limited resources of the company, (they still need time to be innovative) it wouldn't make sense to keep two concurrent versions of the same operating system.

As long as the chip has the ability to run "old code," it's in everyone's best interest to use that advantage to make the transition as easy as possible. After all, this is the same proven strategy that was used to shift the Mac to the PowerPC platform in the first place."

That's the point Gary S.
Why would (or has) apple changed their tune?

damage that can be done by forcing an unwilling migration.

I don't think so.

Sure apple needs to go forward Kelly. That goes with out question.
What I'm saying is do you really believe apple is actually concerned about "unwilling migration"?

Yes. How could they not be? huh.gif

I think there's about half a dozen people here with machines that

are newer than one year old.

Do the other hundreds of machines and OSs not work anymore?

Are people resentful that Apple continues to make newer machines and OSs?

And tries to sell them?

What's your point?  huh.gif

"Do the other hundreds of machines and OSs not work anymore?"
Course they do. Does apple care or will they/do support them?
Not for long. I doubt if apple cares [maybe a small amount] about whether they "work anymore" no matter what their so called press releases state.

It would be nice if they did like they have in the past but not the way the industry stands now.
It's a rat race more than ever. Apple needs to move forward or ...

Take a look at how apple is squeezing out the third party vendors for example.

"Are people resentful that Apple continues to make newer machines and OSs?"
Now that's a loaded,broad,open question.
Although ... No I don't believe they're resentful of the newer machines and OSs.
I do believe people are resentful that apple fluffs them off as "unwilling migrates".

"What's your point?"
You really can't be serious for such a question, can you?
But.
I believe the 64bit is a push out the door before it's ready just to get apples teeth back in the game. Take a look at apples past record with OSs,hardware etc.
Sure they all were improved with the next generations. That's not the point.
To actually believe apple sent the 64 bit out the door as too pacify the "unwilling migrates" is being gullible at best. smile.gif
