iPhoto puzzle in MtnLion
« on: August 30, 2012, 03:09:18 AM »
I publish a newsletter for our local Friends of the Library.

Prior to Mountain Lion, iPhoto ’11 displayed apparent NO complications, but some are now appearing as I seek to use it.

Two of the most vexing are:
  1. A warning re: "inconsistencies" in its Library that requires rebuilding. . . literally, every time I open iPhoto
  2. An absolute failure to permit cropping of any imported photo (so to extract a "head shot" for a thumbnail). The crrop appears to be fine after saving, but when I attempt to insert it into my Pages layout, the full "original" pic is what is pasted!
Any ideas?

Sorry, got delayed by a computer problem here that is not yet fully resolved! eek2.gif

Can I assume that you have checked for updates to iPhoto? Check in the Update section of the Mac App Store.

If so, have you tried moving the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist to your desktop and Opening iPhoto, again. It will probably need to rebuild the iPhoto Library, again.

1. Yup.
2. The "warning" has a "rebuild" option, but I suppose perching it on the DT wouldn't hurt.

'Tis a puzzlement!

I was referring only to moving the plist file to the Desktop, not the rebuilt Library. I am trying to determine if the only problem is a corrupt preference file.

Decided to call AppleCare again, wondering if my "inconsistencies" issue AND a widespread warning to input my password when moving anything to the DT (a permissions problem NOT solvable in the "traditional" manner) were somehow related. These are the only recurring problems of my MtnLion install.

BINGO!

It took about an hour on the phone with another "Senior" but it's now TOTALLY copasetic. Did all kinds of steps (few of which I would come close to accomplishing w/o him sharing my screen) starting with Terminal, then going to Recover Disk, and other nether regions, including several "visits" to Mac OX Utilities. He had me remove the plist, only once. Many of the other elements of the "treatment" we did multiple times.

He said they have been getting more than a few calls about permissions and MtnLion recently, so he was clearly not unfamiliar with the circumstances.

I would find it impossible to recount all the highways and byways of the OS visited this morning. But it's all solved, now, thank goodness . . . and Tim Cook.
