I give up. JRE 6 has been updated with the code from Apple, who claims they are no longer doing that.
Tp further add to the confusion, if you are using 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or earlier, use this updater: <
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 10>
But, if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion, use this one: <
Java for OS X 2012-005> That's right, no hint of exactly OS X that the update is for!
OTOH, you do remember exactly what the last update number was, right? Sure, so you should have no problem getting the correct one. Besides, at least one of them actually includes the version number in its web page title...
Theoretically, if JRE 6 is installed, Software Update (aka Mac App Store) should figure out which one you need. Don't count on it, however. Yesterday I realized I needed to import some transactions from an app I used for barely a year. It uses Java. So I had to install JRE 6 to use the app. I was a little surprised that I was not asked to install JRE 7, but it worked fine with the 6 version and I disabled it just minutes before reading about the Apple updates. SU/MAS did not suggest that I needed either updater. OK, I re-enabled JRE 6, refreshed MAS (clicked Purchased tab) and there was still no Java update suggested/listed.
The reason? This is the same update released by Oracle last week! So the question remains; When is Apple going to do what it said it was going to do: stopping supporting Java? Period. Releasing the same updater that the system developer did without so much as a mention that it is the same thing simply adds to the cionfusion, IMHO. Not to mention the traffic on the interwebs!
