How to install app from disks onto Mac Mini?
« on: September 22, 2012, 11:14:28 AM »
My wife has a new Mac Mini 10.7.4.
We need to install MS Office 2008 from her old G4 10.4.11 or from the original install DVDs.
Yet the Mini has no DVD tray/reader/drive.

A TSer suggested to use Disk Utility to create a .dmg, which I tried several times. All I get at the end is an error message "Unable to create disk.dmg. Input/Output error"

I thought I might be able to download the app from Microsoft online, but I can't find any re-download site.

Any other suggestions, please?

Have you tried Migration Assistant? I can't speak for 10.7 but in 10.6 it's in Applications/Utilities.

Hi Raven,

I posted about Remote Disc here:
Your previous post about Migration Assistant

Never tried it, but you may be able to use the drive in your old machine to read those discs and install on the Mini.

Otherwise you'll need an external CD/DVD drive to hook up into either one of your USB ports or the Firewire 800 port that should be on that Mini.

Jon, please see this other previous thread regarding Migration Assistant and problems Raven had: MIgration Assistant part 3

Any and all suggestions are most welcome!

Raven,

I posted this on your other thread, you may have missed it:

Raven,

Another option is to add an external DVD/CD reader/writer.

That would allow you to load on the MS suite from the install CDs you have.

I'm hoping the MS suite will be compatible with OS X 10.7.

This one from OWC looks like a good deal that is not too expensive ($55):

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/VLU2SD24XLS/

It is USB 2 only, but OWC also has multi input external options if you would prefer firewire or whatever.

You could also use it to write DVD's of crucial info for backups.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

I have been very pleased with my purchases from OWC, and you will find many TSers that have also had good experiences with them.

FWIW

Jack

If you're seeing the Input/Output Error message when you try to make a dmg of a CD or DVD, that usually means that some part of the CD or DVD is damaged and can't be read.

re: error message "Unable to create disk.dmg. Input/Output error"

I googled the error message and reasons are...

...CD may be damaged. Well, to my eye, it's mint! It was used 3 times on 3 Macs for original installs and kept in its sleeve ever since.

... drive is full. Not so. It's a new Mac Mini with less than 5 gb of new work files migrated to it.

...Stops reading because of copyright protection. Not sure if that's the problem for MS Word Office 2008?

re: Remote Disk
I tried that. Several times.  I enabled the DVD sharing in System Preferences in both the original G4 and new Mac Mini using different options available. Nothing shows up in the Remote Disk window!!

re: add (buy?) external DVD unit...
as a last resort, cause my wife will not need it thereafter. Any new apps will be downloaded. Other files will be downloaded from USB Drives. No need for a DVD reader ($55 plus shipping and taxes) for one time use?

re: Migration Assistant
I did not do that for MS Office. Everything tells me to do fresh installs for apps.

There has to be a way to do this on the Mac Mini!  wallbash.gif

When I migrated from my G4 to my Mac Pro, I used Migration Assistant for everything (including MS Office) and had no problems.

Target disk mode?

I didn't transfer applications because everything I read says to do fresh installs. Except the Mini has no DVD reader.

Shall I try TDM again and JUST transfer MS Office 2008 from the G4 to the Mac Mini? Not sure if there are files with the app outside the app folder that would get reloaded twice? What other problems will I get? The more I horse around with this, the worse it gets.

Target Disk mode simply turns that computer into an external hard drive, usually connected via Firewire. It will simply appear on the other connected computer as an external drive.

I'm not suggesting that anything be dragged and dropped on to the TD drive. Especially not a MS app. MS doesn't care to operate like any other software company in the world, as far as I know... OK, maybe they trade methods with Adobe... but that's another thread!

All I'm suggesting is that most installers allow you to pick the location where you want to install something. I'm hoping that MS would give at least that option to you.

The set up:
Shut down the mini.
Have the G4 already running.
Start up the mini by holding the "T" key down.
Usually the key is held down until you see the FireWire icon on screen. At that point, there is no longer a need to have a monitor on the mini. However, since you don't normally have a monitor connected to it, just keep the "T" key down until its drive shows up on the G4 (at least in a finder window that has been set to show external drives).

Now, insert the MS DVDs in the G4 and run the installer.
One of the first few screens of the installer should have an option to select different location.
If so, select the mini's drive, it should install to the Application folder on the mini by default. You may have to enter the Administrator password for that Mac.
If no, that's not going to work and the disk image may be your only choice short of borrowing a DVD reader/writer. Still, MS is not unlikely to have protection on their installer DVDs and they may not be copyable.

The last option might be to clone the DVDs with Carbon Copy Cloner, if it can do that (despite any copy protection), onto a large enough thumb drive.

Of course, even after all the above machinations, that version of the app(s) may not work in that OS. dntknw.gif wallbash.gif

As for not wanting to buy a DVD/CD reader, how do you plan on updating the next versions of any MS app(s)? Perhaps they will post their stuff at the Mac App Store? I doubt it... Perhaps they'll have their own version, with an array of virus', trojan horses and assorted malware automatically installed when you visit. wallbash.gif

Office 2008 works fine in Mountain Lion.

And as for updating to Office 2011 or beyond, Microsoft, like everyone else these days, including Adobe, offers their software via download, Jim. (yes, even virus-free. wink.gif )

WOW.gif You mean they've graduated to the twentieth century? As I said, I don't own/use any MS software (at least since they dropped IE5). I assume they still require licensing/registration/serial numbers. Does that come as an email or a file in the download? Do they allow a 're-install/re-download' after a drive change/new computer/catastrophe? Just wondering.

Do you think Target Disk mode is usable as an installation method? Does the MS installer allow choosing a location, especially an external one?
