« on: July 19, 2013, 07:02:23 PM »
Hi,

Is there a software for managing extensions for OSX  (10.4.11) ,

Booting in safe mode disable all extensions...would be nice for  troubleshooting and finding  the bad one Thinking.gif ?

I wasn't aware of anything, until I Googled and found this: http://www.macworld.com/article/1051531/diablotin.html It's old, but it might help.

Generally speaking, there aren't "extensions" in OS X like there were in OS 9 and earlier. There are of course system add-ons, some of which (particularly those known as system "haxies") may cause issues, though I'd have to say this is far, far rarer than it ever was in OS 9/8/7...

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode? If it fixes things, then my bet is on something you've added.

What have you added to your system, and particularly your startup items?

Have you tried turning off all startup items and rebooting to see if that cures things?

What are the symptoms of your problem?

So. I would look at what you'be added or changed in the last 10 days. Computers don't change the way they operate without a specific reason. Most of the time it's because we made a change. It's a good habit (that I seldom follow blush-anim-cl.gif ) to keep a record of the changes we make. wink.gif

Read Resolving Kernel Panics for more troubleshooting ideas. I don't know if this applies to you, but I had had frequent KPs (quite awhile back) until I uninstalled everything Norton (aka Symantec).

I would be extremely dubious about using a piece of software which hasn't been updated since OSX 10.2.8, 2006 (see  Diablotin's home page).

There is virtually no discussion of this software anywhere on the web.  This alone indicates that the software is a rogue concept.

There is also not a lot of discussion of removing so-called extensions (as Paddy notes the concept is not really germain to OSX) for troubleshooting purposes outside of the afore-mentioned "Safe Boot".

IMHO picking apart the OS like this will 'end in tears' as the expression goes, and I hope you have a really good back up for when things go all 'pear shaped'.

You haven't told us which of your machines (from sidebar) is causing issues.

However it was helpful that you specified OSX 10.4.11.  That leads me to the question that dealing with OSX since its inception suggests to me is the most relevant here, namely, how old is this install of 10.4.11?

I am thinking you would be far better off doing a CLEAN INSTALL of your OS over a nice fresh NUKE 'N' PAVE reformat.

Certainly better than dicking around with a bunch of extensions that could render the machine inoperable......

YMMV

The machine is a DA...think i did a clean install about a year ago.

Just discover also that one of the 2 internal   usb port is dead,  sad.gif

Actually had à 4 ports USB card and don't use that one.

Could  that be a cause of crash  too?...can it be replaced ?

Thanks for your help

You list 2 DAs in your sidebar....??

A year on a clean install should be OK.

I am not familiar with the internals of that model but it could be as simple as a cold solder or bad solder joint.  On the other hand it could be an issue deep in the bowels of the motherboard.

You could look around in there yourself but I expect any G4 is going to cost more than it is worth to have professionally opened, let alone fixed.
