MacMate (MacAce) offering 10GB free storage space
« on: August 05, 2013, 02:43:02 PM »
They are a British company, so I'm wondering about compatibilities between US and semi-metric connections! tease.gif Their TOS is extremely simple but it's written in English. dntknw.gif Just wondering if any of our 'other-side-of-the-pond' have used their services...
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults! :yes:

FREE?  Um, yeah, for sure.....

Haven't we learned yet that if you are not paying for a service then somehow, somewhere, you are the 'product'?

The relevant question here is: "Where and how do these guys make their money to be able to offer this so-called "free" service?"

Until I know the answer to that "Free" is too expensive!   ;-}

Most places that offer "Free" storage, including Apple/iCloud, Dropbox, PhotoBucket, etc. would hope you need more than what they 'give' you free. You will then opt to purchase more space. Simple. No hidden agenda. No different than "Buy two and get a third one free" ad or sale. I don't see any nefarious plans/purposes. YMMV. My only point was to present this as another choice.

It is twice what Apple offers with iCloud but does not provide any email service and other benefits of iCloud. Hardly a threat to Apple, that's for certain. I've had Dropbox almost from the beginning and still have gobs of space available. I simply don't use the space there or at iCloud for permanent backups. As I posted in another thread, we must be aware that things change, businesses close, 'free' space can disappear. "Don't put all your biscuits in the same oven." ... er, something like that! wink.gif

Well I don't know anything about these MacMate dudes.

Call me paranoid but I have a big problem with storing anything important to me on a computer/server that I don't control.  The company may have a stellar reputation and the best of intentions but it only takes one miscreant to destroy (or sell) a lot of data.  I wouldn't put anything of mine on someone else's server that I hadn't encrypted ninety-five ways from Sunday.  Actually not true, I wouldn't do it at all.  Period!!

I come from the era of university mainframes where somebody was always between you and your data.  The micro revolution for us was about control of our data as much as anything else.

Trusting backup or important storage to any of the various clouds is a recipe for disaster

I agree very much with rgray on this matter.

I want my data under MY control.
