Aperture 2 compatibility?

I still have to wait 6 days before it gets here, but I'm wondering if my Aperture 2 is going to run on the Mavericks OS.  Or, if any of you guys can steer me to a sight/list of applications that went by the wayside when Apple passed their 10.5.8 Os, which was the last update that could be installed on my old PPC G5, it would sure be appreciated.

It sounds like you may have a PPC version. If so, it will not run on the new hardware, no matter what OS you put on it. If you still have an operating PPC machine or even one running 10.7, you can open System Information (click on the 'Apple' icon in the Menu Bar and press the option key, is the easiest way to open it) and select Software->Applications in the left-hand list of things. I'm already on Mavericks, so what I see in that app is different now, but I think will eventually see a list of all your apps and there should be a column named "Kind" or maybe "Type". That will indicate if it is a PPC/Universal/Intel/etc. app. As I said, if it is "PPC" it simply won't run on the new hardware.

If you got it via the App Store, you should be able to simply update it. If you bought it in a different manner, you may be able to 'sweet talk' Apple into letting you download the new version, anyway. Last resort, of course, would be to buy it, it's still less than $80 ($79.99, to be exact!).

It says, "Universal"; does that mean that I can update it, Jim?  Thanks for the quick response, too!  Thank you, too, Paddy.  It sounds as if I can go ahead and install it on the new MacBook, and then, without running it, update it from an Aperture 3 update disc.  Does that sound right?  It would be about $60 cheaper than springing for the complete new program. . .

You can't update Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 without buying it; and there is no price reduction. If you use Migration Assistant to move all your files over, then just let it do it's thing, then delete Aperture 2, leaving your library files intact etc. and install Aperture 3, and point it to your old Library, at which point it will no doubt do some major updating to those files. I think. (I use Lightroom - that would more or less be the procedure for it)

Read the last post in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5053695 - and do follow the suggestion to back the library up etc. before doing anything!

Keep in mind, Paddy, that I'm going to be installing this on a brand new MacBook, with absolutely no Aperture files on it.  Not real sure how I'm going to bring the old pics over, and I may just decide to leave the old stuff on the G5, and just go from here. . .

Beacher, you should be able to move your Aperture library over to the new Mac.

BUT… you might want to hold off on Aperture 3. Aperture 4 is supposed to be released very, very soon.

Aperture 3 is rather long in the tooth at 3 years old now, though you could always spend the $20 (I'd get it at Amazon, not eBay) and update to 3 and then (maybe) get upgrade pricing on Aperture 4. I don't know what they're doing with the pricing for it; typically things in the App store don't have upgrade pricing. I don't know if there will be a boxed version available.

Ah, geez, I've just moved into the "Twenty-teens" and they're already trying to leave me behind?    I guess I'll take advantage of your advice, and wait and find out what Aperture 4 will have to offer, as I can always go back and pick up an earlier version.  Thanks, Paddy, and just wait; I'm sure I'm going to have a lot more questions in a week or so!
