Postscript to Reinstall MS Office 2004 on Power Mac G5 Quad
« on: December 24, 2013, 06:36:53 AM »
Hi,

While searching for an alternative to Entourage I encountered Gnome Evolution.
It is not available since Novell abandoned it.
I find it strange that there are Open Source  integrated alternatives to Word, Excel and Power Point but none that include an Entourage equivalent.
Many have enquired after such on Google but the Open Source community seems to have other priorities.

FWIW

As far as I know, Entourage is simply the email reading/writing/sending app from Microsoft. It probably has functions (Calendar/Tasks/etc.) that are proprietary and it probably 'talks' to other MS apps better/differently than other mail apps. I don't have any MS apps and never used any on a Mac since the original Microsoft Basic on the original Macintosh! blush-anim-cl.gif

OTOH, here is a link to download Entourage 2008 directly from "the horses mouth." wink.gif Whether you have the required hardware or not, you'll have to verify. It looks like Tiger is the minimum OSX version.

Is there a reason you can't use Mail.app? As well as the included Calendar/Contacts/etc. ? dntknw.gif And I'm sure you've come across OpenOffice, also.

You neglected to post the link, Jim. Maybe my puns have addled your brain?  whistling.gif

I gotta go find my braen... brane... whatever! scram.gif

Eric had been using Entourage 2004. I don't know if Entourage 2008 will play well with the rest of Office 2004.

Still don't know if this would be free. All the Entourage downloads seem to be updaters which wouldn't be much use if he doesn't still have the app. dntknw.gif

Here's a list of all the free <updates, Service Packs, add-ons, etc. for Office 2004>. Surely one of them will restore Entourage to what he has? ...or not. Is it too late to request it from Santa?! santagrin.gif

<Interesting read here.> Doesn't sound like it's worth the effort to get it! dntknw.gif

I came across Apps for your new Mac: Best email clients. It might be worth reading for some suggestions. I use Entourage 2008 myself, mostly because I started in OS 9 with Outlook Express and Entourage (in its incarnations in Office X and Office 2008) are similar. I got used to its interface and it does what I want. I never used Entourage 2004 but I assume that it is pretty much identical.
