Kindle Paperwhite upgrade

I keep Calibre up to date, but agree that sometimes the updates come out so fast it's hard to keep up with it all.

Here's what I did:
  • Removed all my user installed plugins from Calibre (did that a few days ago).
  • Restarted Calibre.
  • Backed up my Calibre library to a memory stick.
  • Removed all books from Calibre.
  • Restarted Calibre.
  • Downloaded 2 ebooks and loaded them into Calibre and then transferred one of them to my dirty Kindle Paperwhite.
  • Used dirty Kindle Paperwhite to see if it worked, and all books worked fine.
  • Washed my now black fingers. Ick.
  • Today I launched Calibre and reinstalled one plugin to Calibre—the one that is my favorite and allows me to do collections in Calibre.
  • Restarted Calibre.
  • Added that other book to my dirty Kindle Paperwhite, and everything worked. This book wasn't run through the plugin, but I wanted to see if even having the plugin installed made a difference.
  • Washed my dirty fingers and waited a bit.
  • Restarted Calibre.
  • Loaded another book into Calibre, and then loaded that book onto my dirty Kindle Paperwhite.
  • This book (which had been run through the plugin) worked fine.
  • Washed my dirty fingers, again.
  • Read on my now working Kindle Paperwhite, got fed up with having dirty fingers (cannot get the paperwhite clean and there are odd spots on the screen) and called Amazon. They are shipping me another Kindle Paperwhite—which I hope will be clean and will work.

I did discover that this dirty Kindle Paperwhite was not shipped by Amazon, but from one of their retailers. There isn't any way for me to leave feedback with this retailer, otherwise I would. Anyhow, if the fourth Kindle Paperwhite isn't acceptable, then I'm going to ask Amazon to send the new version of paperwhite as my replacement. I think I've earned it at this point. wink.gif

I had 2 friends tell me, "Get an iPad!". ha ha I told them we have one, but it's Sneakers, not mine. Now, if Apple ever comes up with an eink type reader that will let me load Kindle books onto it (or let me use something like Aldiko and mobi books), I will buy it in a heart beat.

Kimmer, I load Kindle books on my iPad all the time. There's an app for that. wink.gif But I suspect you know that.

There are various alternatives to Aldiko for the iPad as well: http://alternativeto.net/software/aldiko/?platform=ipad

Thanks for the link. My problem is that the iPad is a shiny screen (Retina display?), and not an eink screen. That's what Apple needs to come up with for me.

Of course, the iPad (full-sized or mini) aren't "e-ink" screens. OTOH, the Kindle does seem to be pretty much a 'one-trick pony'. And, apparently, not one that has been 'broken'! The two devices are totally different. I noticed I actually have more than six different 'ebook' readers even on my iPhone (not a device I'd recommend for reading a book! While some of those are actually PDF viewers, they do include Kindle and Nook apps. I can only assume they offer the same functionality (I really don't like that word... ) as your "dirty" device but they are probably harder to read in Sunlight.

My onliest complaint is the dearth of styling in all except the iBook. I don't understand why they are such crippled html viewers (extremely limited font choices, poor indenting, ridiculous auto-hyphenation, etc., etc.. Even IE 5 could display better text formatting! dntknw.gif It seems to be an attempt to build for the lowest common denominator, except they created a format that displays worse than text on an Apple ][ (without an 80 column display card)! wallbash.gif Of course, the file sizes are minimal... easy when there's so little there! rolleyes.gif

Good luck with getting a satisfactory replacement. Sounds like two different "Amazon's"!

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Probably shouldn't say this, but my 'one-trick pony' (as xABD calls it) replacement Kindle PW has arrived. It's clean, tidy, works (so far), no stinky smell, no black fingers from handling, connected to our wi-fi easily, books now downloaded and I've actually read on it.  thumbup.gif  Hope this one lasts. wink.gif

I really like my 'one-trick pony' as all I want to do with it is read books.
