Thanks, Neil !

I cherish the memory of the time I was in London on July 4. Experienced gracious hospitality from all concerned.

The things we have in common far outweigh any differences our ancestors may have had in the past.

I was lead to read H.L. Mencken's Interpretation of the Declaration of Independence:

QUOTE
When things get so balled up that the people of a country have to cut loose from some other country, and go it on their own hook, without asking no permission from nobody, excepting maybe God Almighty, then they ought to let everybody know why they done it, so that everybody can see they are on the level, and not trying to put nothing over on nobody.

All we got to say on this proposition is this: first, you and me is as good as anybody else, and maybe a damn sight better; second, nobody ain’t got no right to take away none of our rights; third, every man has got a right to live, to come and go as he pleases, and to have a good time however he likes, so long as he don’t interfere with nobody else. That any government that don’t give a man these rights ain’t worth a damn; also, people ought to choose the kind of goverment they want themselves, and nobody else ought to have no say in the matter. That whenever any goverment don’t do this, then the people have got a right to can it and put in one that will take care of their interests. Of course, that don’t mean having a revolution every day like them South American coons and yellow-bellies and Bolsheviki, or every time some job-holder does something he ain’t got no business to do. It is better to stand a little graft, etc., than to have revolutions all the time, like them coons and Bolsheviki, and any man that wasn’t a anarchist or one of them I. W. W.’s would say the same. But when things get so bad that a man ain’t hardly got no rights at all no more, but you might almost call him a slave, then everybody ought to get together and throw the grafters out, and put in new ones who won’t carry on so high and steal so much, and then watch them. This is the proposition the people of these Colonies is up against, and they have got tired of it, and won’t stand it no more. The administration of the present King, George III, has been rotten from the start, and when anybody kicked about it he always tried to get away with it by strong-arm work.

Changing the language, even when it isn't modern usage, makes things stick out a little better.  It was about how King George was treating us; not about anything where we thought we were any different or better than the mother country!

Thanks for remembering us, Neil! Good to know there are no hard feelings! Loyal friendships are more important than a 'treaty'! yes.gif salute.gif fireworks.gif

BTW, this year is the 200th anniversary of our National anthem (9/14/1814)! I think England has one slightly older. Thinking.gif

And I remember a quote (likely apocryphal) by an Englishman who toured the US by train. As he marveled at the richness of the land and the beauty of the scenery, he said, "Damn George III".

Love this holiday. Love my freedoms. Love my country. Appreciate and care for my friends from other countries. My town does fireworks on the 3rd, so last night I stood on the front porch and watched the sky light up. Saw most of the beautiful fireworks through the trees. Really pretty as they are framed that way. At the end, everyone whoops and cheers and claps (and we're close enough I heard them), and I stood on my porch and cheered and clapped with them. biggrin.gif

Tonight we are joining friends for steak dinner. Every so thankful we are able to do this.

Maybe we should warn our American cousins that the language may be considered "fruity", but not in a nasty or aggressive way wink.gif

"Sour grapes"? (I can only assume that is the British spelling...)

Love the line, "...of course, you'd pay higher taxes, but you can't put a price on that!" Outstanding example of great British humour! laughhard.gif Thanks, Frances! salute.gif

I had to double-check that was a valid, trusted url. Although I read the post on my iPhone, I did not want to visit the "site" on that browser (I have many extensions/protections on the desktop Mac). Apparently, it is nothing more than a 'compressed' url (TinyURL?). Since it was from a known person (as opposed to an email), I felt somewhat less concerned. Frankly, I was hoping that the site might be a less ad cluttered video site in Belgium (".be")! clap.gif wink.gif Alas...
