Voice Memo
« on: August 30, 2014, 12:46:03 AM »
My computer: Mac Air 1.3 GHz intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1600 MHZ DDR3

My wife has recorded a long conversation that she wants me to minute for her. So this morning I tried quickly to plug in her iPhone to my mac - doesn't work as it's been synched to her mac.

So opening her mac to capture data - she has not ticked before sync voice memo - so ticked synch and ticked synch voice memo - warning sign comes up and states she could by sync and loose all her data........

So is there an app that i can use to get the voice memo from her iPhone? Or do I just have to tape the whole conversation onto my iPhone from hers in the most boring way this evening?

You can probably send the Voice Memos directly to your Mac via email. Open Voice memos on her iPhone and select a memo. At the bottom of the screen should be three items; a Trash can, an "Edit" button and a small box with an arrow pointing up. That last item is the "standard" symbol for emailing something. tab that button and select at least three ways to send that memo to others, especially you! wink.gif

The answer to your question about that sync warning is slightly longer. First, let's see if you can that memo into your Mac. thumbup.gif

Getting a Voice Memo into a computer

Be aware that I do not allow automatic syncing music and video. I manage those manually, I suspect your wife  may have that setup, also. At any rate, I also have also have disabled "Sync Music" in the "Music" tab that is visible when you select an iDevice to iTunes. For speed, I suggest you also disable that setting, at least for this exercise. With that out of the way, here is how it works on my Mac and iPhone.

The following steps assume you have the iPhone connected and visible in iTunes that can be used to sync with it.
    1. Select the iPhone's main item, the one shows the iPhone's name and a disclosure arrow.
    2. Select Voice Memos in the list of items under the iPhone (click the little disclosure arrow, if it is not pointing down).
    3. Click the "Sync" button in the lower, left-hand area of the iTunes window.
The Voice Memos are now on the computer. You can now delete them from the iDevice to save memory. They can now be played in iTunes. In iTunes, select Music in the Library list, sort the list by Genre. Your Voice Memos will be listed in the "Voice Memo" Genre.

The voice memo is 80 mins and she tried to send it, but that failed.

OK, use the other method.

Once you get the memos on her computer, normal networking/sharing methods can be used to transfer them to you. No maximum size problems that often occur with emailing. rolleyes.gif

You may want to consider alternative recording apps, also. It might be handy to get one that allows breaking a long memo into several short ones. Similar to having multiple tracks on a CD/record. wink.gif There are 'editing' capabilities in Voice Memos, but I'm not sure they'd be of much use in your case.

But... but... thousands (OK, a couple) of us want to know if the method described works! flail.gif wink.gif

Of course, the real task is finding a free app that will convert the audio into text for you. If you have 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or higher, you might try <Dictation>. I've never tried it! blush-anim-cl.gif Although I once had a job some 45 years ago where I actually dictated a few things. wink.gif Here's a Macworld <story> about it.
