Charging up the "toys"

We just completed a 2 week scenic trip thru most of Western Montana and Northern Idaho pulling our faithful travel trailer. Carried along one MBP, iPhone5, iPad Mini and the iPad2. Some stops had no electrical service, (we have an i inverter generator in case of really needing power).  Some had commercial power   toothgrin.gif

FWIW: With the MBP fully charged and sleeping, the iPad mini could be plugged in (Thunderbird) and recharge quite nicely. The iPhone5 (also Thunderbird) and iPad 2 (old wide connecter) does not charge. jawdrop.gif  Wake up the MBP and they all charge. WOW.gif

Now with all of that technical info and about 5 bucks one could almost buy a cup of  Jo at most Starbucks. Tickled.gif

Methinks you mean "Thunderbolt", Daryl. wink.gif The mail program is Thunderbird. Gotta keep all these critters and natural occurrences straight...

And Daryl, I have no idea why the iPad mini would recharge from an unplugged, sleeping MBP when the other devices wouldn't. From what I've read, as long as you start charging the devices while the MBP is awake, then it will continue charging them when they're asleep. As long as you've got a fairly recent MBP, that is (say, 2011 or more recent?). Can anyone confirm this? I do know that just plugging my iPhone 5 into my sleeping MBP didn't do anything (neither woke up). My iPad (4th gen) however, DOES appear to be charging, even though the MBP is asleep and didn't wake up. Weird.

Thunderbolt, Thunderbird, Thunderstorm, Thunder and Lightning.  At least I remembered part of the "occurrence". Dont think I expected to be notified by e-mail of anything. tongue.gif  

The MBP is a  late 2011 model.  We had plenty of down time to test/play with it. Found the most effective method  of course was the USB AC adapter.  Now that I am home will give it another shot just out of curiosity

I assume you have some sort of Thunderbolt to USB adaptor to connect the iPhone and iPads to the MBP. AFAIK, neither of those devices have Thunderbolt connections, they are USB only, I thought. dntknw.gif Naming ererz asyde, I'm confused (again) about how and what was connected to what. wink.gif I may understand... when I wake up... sleep1.gif

The cable that came with the iPhone5, and the iPad mini are both Thunderbolt at one end and USB at the other.  The cable that came with the iPad2 is different in that the iPad end is about an inch wide but still USB at the other. Pictures provided upon request. ALL connect USB to the MBP. HTH. jawdrop.gif

I must be missing something here. To charge the i device, one would plug the Thunderbolt connecter into the iDevice, and the USB end into one of the USB ports on the MBP. Option #2 is to plug the USB end into one of the Apple Provided USB/AC adapters plugged into any 120V ac source. Samo Samo with the iPad2.

OK maybe a light just dawned. Lightning???? Thunderbolt????  I am calling the connector that came with the iPhone5 and the iPad mini "Thunderbolt", in fact it MAY be Lightning???? have not researched the difference between them.

OK  MY BAD. The cables are Lightning NOT Thunderbolt. See what happens when you have an extended leisure  trip??? Brain f---
the fact remains, the iPhone5 and the iPad2 did not charge when hooked up to a sleeping MBP.  The iPad mini did.

Yeah, the very small connector that goes into the iDevice is called Lightning. It's actually a modified USB connector. Thunderbolt ports are on new Macs and your MBP probably has one. They are much faster than USB (2 & 3, anyway) and can be used for Video output, also. There are also Thunderbolt to FireWire and Ethernet adaptors, but I don't think anyone makes one for a USB output. That would probably be like installing a V-8 in a go-cart! wink.gif

We were posting at the same time! Great minds? yes.gif

Is that iPad mini the newest iDevices? Perhaps it has hardware/software capabilities that are more 'sneaky' that the iPad 2 or even the (now old) iPhone 5! wink.gif

The mini is new to me, about a month old, HOWEVER it is a refurb from apple.  Does not have the retina  display.  ?????

At the age of my eyes (originally installed models, never updated, although I did have some internal hardware swapped a few years ago), I wouldn't be able to tell "Retina" from "Pupil"! laughhard.gif
