Can connect wireless but not wired
« on: October 04, 2014, 11:18:00 PM »
Hi I am very frustrated please help. Thursday my computer was working fine. Then I decided to upgrade from snow lion to maverick. As soon as I finished downloading and installing my imac will not connect via Ethernet. It will however connect wireless. I spent countless hours with internet provider and Apple. Everything with internet is working. I can connect a dell laptop via Ethernet and wireless with no problem. Apple says my port is probably bad. I just find it hard to believe that as soon as i installed Maverick I started having trouble with Ethernet. Could they be correct. I am no tech but I seem to think it is because of upgrade. I also bought new Ethernet cable just in case.

Thanks for any help.

Do you have a backup for your previous OS? BTW, which one was it? There were Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion before Maverick but no Snow Lion. It would be helpful if you gave us more information about the specific iMac that you have, including the model, hard drive capacity, amount of unused hard drive space, and the amount of RAM installed.

If you have a cloned backup, boot from it and see if Ethernet works. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup, you can restore from that to find out.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

First, Welcome Aboard, Tammy!

How is your Cable or DSL modem connected to your WiFi router? My Ethernet connection actually has my Apple WiFi router between my Mac and the Cable modem. Have you tried that setup?

Also, take a look at <this Apple Knowledge Base Document>.

Sorry it was Snow Leopard not Snow Lion, lol. Apple helped me install it so I have no idea if it was backed up. Although, I did ask them if we had to uninstall Leopard before installing Maverick and they said no. I have 419.42 GB of 499.25 GB of hard drive left.
Sorry I am not computer savy so excuse me when i ask what is a cloned backup? Should I uninstall Maverick? Thanks for your help.

Hi Tammy,

I see there's someone else who stays up late. smile.gif

First, when they mention a cloned backup they are talking about a copy of the whole hard drive on a separate space, usually an external drive. You can use several methods for making the copies but the most trusted are Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. If you purchase a separate drive you would connect your iMac to it and use the software to make a copy that you can use to boot from if you ever have a problem on your iMac. There are other methods such as Time Machine or using Disk Utility but TM can not be used to start up from, only to revert to earlier states. We can walk you through that at another time.

It is suggested that one backs up the drive frequently since the saying is "It's not a matter of IF the drive will fail, it's a matter of WHEN" as hard drives will fail at some point. Also other problems can occur to mess up the data and having a backup saves your bacon. smile.gif

As to the Ethernet problem, I've included some links below with a few suggestions that may help. smile.gif Your problem is not unknown in the Mavericks world as many others experienced the same situation upon upgrade.  First go into your System preferences, Network and see if the Ethernet is shown as active. Try renewing your DHCP lease and see if that helps. You can also use the Assist button (I'm not on Mavericks so I only assume it is there) to walk you through some checks. Do that and try some of the ideas on the links and come back to tell us if anything helped. Some people were helped by doing a few resets of the computer and/or router but read the links for more details as to how to do that.
