app store question
« on: May 30, 2015, 11:40:03 AM »
When I first got my iMac (Yosemite installed), the App Store link (found via the Apple menu) notified me when updates were available. Now, that doesn't happen. I find out about them when I go to MacUpdate or VersionTracker. When I launch App Store and click Updates, I do see the ones that are available.

I noticed that the Debug menu of App Store has an option to reset the application. If I do this, will that restore the original showing of the number of available updates? What are the consequences of resetting App Store?

What are the consequences of resetting App Store?
1. Be sure to make a backup (I'd suggest several sheets of acid-free paper and indelible ink) the App Store prefs info before using that Rest option.
2. As long as you are not electrically grounded, you should be safe.
3. Check that you have 'ticked' ( love the way our previous imperialist have terms for these things! ) the "Automatically check for updates" in the App Store System Prefs. BTW, that's the only thing I have ticked. "I'll download what I want, when I want. Thank you very much."
4. Don't worry about a thing, everything is backed up at Apple Data Centers, which are have a ~95.02% uptime guarantee! thumbup.gif

Please report on what happened when you used the 'Reset Application' menu, assuming you have access to a computer within a week. salute.gif An interweb search reveals that not many, even at Apple, have attempted to use that function! At least not many have did and lived to talk about it. dntknw.gif OTOH, I'm sure Paddy will supply us with ~50 links... rolleyes.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Wow, Jim. Your advice certainly makes me feel safe. Maybe I'll relax by skydiving without a parachute.  wallbash.gif

Interesting. This was ticked previously on my iMac, and apparently it was unticked during an upgrade (unless I did during the past 7 months when my brain wasn't functioning at all, and then all bets are off). Anyhow, thanks for this reminder. I have now reset my prefs. Jon, I'd try this first before resetting the app via the debug menu.

I do have that box checked. However, I also had installed OnyX and it is set, by default, to have App Store look for updates every seven days. I reset it to have it check every day. We'll see if that does the trick. Otherwise, I can always call Apple (I have Applecare).

I just found this Make use of the Mac App Store debug menu at cnet. Not sure how reliable it is since the date is October 2012. The part you might be most interesting in is near the end of the article:

QUOTE
Clear cookies and Reset application
These two may be the most useful options in the Debug menu, which will clear the temporary storage of page settings and also clear all settings and reset the program to its default state. Along with removing files from the downloads folder, you can use these options to clear and reset the program, which may fix odd problems you may be experiencing with installing or managing purchases.

Like I said, I don't know how trustworthy this is.

Well, it does come from Mr. Kessler, who 'left' C|net and now runs <MacIssues>. He might have that in the archives, assuming C|net didn't claim ownership... wallbash.gif Even if he doesn't, he's pretty quick to answer direct questions, just remember, this is a weekend! wink.gif
