Sales pitch?!

Several TSers have been frustrated by Apple's decision to stop developing iPhoto. Adobe Lightroom has been suggested as a much more capable replacement for it (and for Photos, also). I came across some links showing how one expert uses LR and thought they might be interesting to those wondering how and what it can do, as well as how it integrates with other apps. In these vids, the other apps are Photoshop (Adobe) and Perfect Photo Suite (on1). There are several hours worth of vids at Adobe, but those are not for casual viewing! Instead, try one or more of the following and see what controls are available and how they can be used... even if you don't want or need integration with any other software.

These are separate links, but they and many others are all in a blog which you might find more helpful than my simple list. The format is similar in each vid; work flow starts with LR, then the image is opened in Perfect Photo Suite. You can end the vid at that point, as there is usually not much more done in LR.In fairness, I must reveal that I now own the Perfect Photo Suite. I did not purchase it, however. I had a paid subscription to Photoshop Elements Techniques magazine, print edition. My subscription was through May 2017. They announced several months ago that they would soon cease publishing the print version (a digital version has been available all along). Today I received an email announcing two 'gifts'. First, my subscription to PET has been extended to 6/30/2019 (25 months!). Second, I was supplied with a link to download version 9.5 of Perfect Photo Suite and a serial number to make it active! The retail price is $149.95!

Obviously, I had paid for the PET subscription (2 year renewal, 12 print magazines for $98, December, 2014). I got only two printed magazines, and digital ones are certainly much cheaper to produce! In effect, I paid $98 for two printed magazines, the software suite, and another 12 digital editions of PET. All in all, I'm still happy! wink.gif I'm not sure what Macworld provided subscribers when they ceased publishing their magazine... I wish I'd done as well on some land I once bought... rolleyes.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system

I’m slowly renewing my somewhat casual interest in photography, having bought a new camera 3 months ago.

Browsing the Web to update myself about photo editing and monitors I discovered 10 bit image depth. Never heard of all this stuff before – but the experts, it seems, have been berating Apple since 2012 for lack of support for 10 bit -in contrast to Windows.

(But the new MacPro and MBPro apparently can handle 10 bit),

It’s unlikely that a hobbyist like me would need to delve into this. It was while exploring new monitors that I started to get lost in this jungle.

Here we go again “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing”.

I have no idea what they are talking about. blush-anim-cl.gif I never knew there was anything between 8 and 16 bits! Can't "see" that two extra bits would do much for an 8 bit image, either. Waters can get extremely muddy when experts start throwing numbers around that may be beyond the human eye/brain to understand. laughhard.gif Don't let the "experts" prevent you from enjoying your passions! thumbup.gif I still think of photography as more art than science or technology. Some of my happiest times were in a darkroom watching how my 'edits' came out in a developer tray full of caustic chemicals! Who could have imagined making hundreds of edits with the ability to "undo" any or all of them in mere seconds and still have an unaltered original?! Amazing, even if I don't know how many bits there are!

BTW, I think all the apps mentioned above work with 16 bits. dntknw.gif

Yes XABD, having foolishly exposed myself to all that tech stuff I'm reminded of the person who said that instead of being buried in the question, he was now buried in the answer.
