Two QuickTime apps on my iMac
« on: July 03, 2015, 07:56:42 PM »
While trying to solve the problem of playing midi files, I did the "get info" on one of the midi's and saw this strange notice in the OPEN WITH menu:

[attachment=3161:qt_two.png]

According to this I have QuickTime 10.4 and QuickTime 10.3. Strangely, 10.3 has the correct icon for QT, while 10.4 shows the icon for ... not sure what app that is for actually. I searched my iMac and I find one, and only one, QuickTime application—and it says it's "Version 10.4 (833.6)".

Any idea why the 10.3 is lingering in menus, and how do I clear it?

As a stab in the dark, how about resetting the launch services database? You can do it with OnyX. Select the Maintenance tab, then select Rebuilding.

That database will probably work. Just be careful stabbing things in the dark! eek2.gif

I notice that the "(10.4)" version has a generic icon. Thinking.gif I suppose you've made a search? rolleyes.gif Even Finder/Spotlight should find all the copies. You can then access them and reveal their true age and usefulness.

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

I just dumped Onyx 2.7.something off my iMac because I never use it—it was something Sneakers used to run on my iMac when he did maintenance. LOL!  I actually have no clue how to use it and I'm not sure I want to learn. Okay, I'll try it. wink.gif

After narrowing how I was searching in the finder (Spotlight kept launching the correct app), I found it sitting in an old CCC backup from January 2015. How do I go about removing this from the "safetynet" folder on my CCC drive? I'm also wondering if the weird icon is because there's a system conflict with the 2 versions being available?

EDITED TO ADD: Okay, installed and ran Onyx and that fixed the problem. smile.gif

Thank you both very much!
