Updated 24in Mac to 10.6.8

Today, I updated my 24 inch iMac, this one, to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
Its working really really nicely, the browsers are fast and working well too.

(Then I hooked my new Seagate up and used Time Machine to back the entire computer up, after culling a lot of stuff that nobody needs anymore.
This stuff will go onto the newer 27.)

Then was about to upgrade this one to Yosemite, 10.10.5 and my grandson said NOOOOO!
As its an older computer, so I got this from the App Store, darn, I cant make a PDF out of it to show it here, but the upgrade got warning reviews to not do it if your computer is old, which this one is.
And 10.5.8 works fine, so should I just leave it at is? My husband will be using it and he doesn't need anything new or fancy.
Once I put it back to factory standards, I am hoping it will be just fine for him?
Not needing 10.10.5.
Should I leave it the way it is now?

Before you make a decision, check app compatibility at Roaring Apps. Bear in mind that you probably won't be able to download 10.10 after Sept. 30, when 10.11 will be released. If you want to hedge your bets, you can download 10.10 now but hold off on installing it. That way, you'll preserve your options.

Thats an interesting site, and I see that I shall wait.
I have 10.10 on both my 27 inch Macs, and the more I use this Snow Leopard one here on this 24 inch one, I realize that its very nice and will be just fine for my husband.

I heartily recommend keeping that computer at 10.6.8. It is the last that can run older PPC programs and is rock stable. IMO that was the best OS Apple made and despite it not having the latest security and not being able to run newer apps, it is a joy to use. My eyes don't like the flat appearance of the recent OS and I will cheer the day Apple allows some sort of skin or appearance adjustments. ( I miss Kaleidoscope from OS 9    )

I have not tried it myself, but see if XRevert is of any use.

I too miss kaleidoscope.
Also the mosaic screensaver on these Macs was wonderful!
Thats gone too. I dont know why Apple gets rid of some of the favorite stuff.

But Im for sure not going to put this 24 inch one back to factory standards nor cranking up the OS. Taking your advice on keeping 10.6.8. And also keeping the disk, might put my brother's older Mac up to it too.
There is a lot of stuff on it that my husband might not use right away, but some older versions of Photoshop and other apps that are wonderful, and are considered obsolete. Should keep most of that.

So I have to figure out how to get rid of my email settings and put his in, and get rid of my hundreds of weather bookmarks and photoshop stuff. Cleaning the computer up is time consuming, but thats going to be the best way.

I will certainly have more questions.
This is quite a good thing for me to be learning how to do this.

Looks like Im almost ready to give him the 24 inch one. I think Adobe will let you have 5 copies of PS and PSE on home computers, but I should find out, as he won't use them, so I could delete them. I will have to delete my email accounts and set his up. Now that I have transferred everything from the 24 to my new 27, I can empty that external HD and back up all of his stuff onto it?Just wondering if it will create a conflict with some things, if I dont strip everything out of the 24 before adding all of his stuff?Ive learned a lot doing this, and also how important it is to always have a complete backup for each device.Anything that I am missing that Ive not thought of that you can see?Oh, I forgot this.This is what the 24 looks like now, and when I add my husbands stuff, it won't add that much. He can go thru my folders and trash what he doesn't want. Will leave the pictures but Im sure he won't want my music, its mostly blues and gospel.

If what you are adding of his is just data, I can't see how there could be a conflict. Do be sure you have a backup of your stuff that you moved somewhere before erasing and storing his things on the external.  As you say, it is imperative to have at least one backup of each computer. You could also partition an external and save two peoples' data on one disk. But in that case I'd have a second external as well. One can never have too many backups.

I actually have 2 backups of that one.
Then when all is done, I will put that old one back to factory standards and donate it to the school.

Thanks Jon, when I eventually give in to the new OS I'll be sure to give it a try.  I also found "Flavors" but in the comments below the app it is noted that it will not run on El Capitan and the creators are not going to update it...seems it is too hard with the new System Integrity Protection. Sigh.

Jony Ive may be a good designer in 3D but his 2D skills leave much to be desired.

I much much prefer the 3D look, the new stuff looks like they've taken a step backwards. Flat and uninteresting.

I love the little Google car!  Very cute.  But that video is totally correct, around here over 98% of all accidents are always humans at fault.
Ever try driving in Boston? Ive driven in San Jose Costa Rica, Naples Italy, and many many tropical islands,,,,,,and I wouldnt do that again at my age for a million bucks!

I had many questions and problems when I backed up and upgraded. If you search "RAVEN", you will find many posts from me on this topic. I had many font issues that I also had to clean up. ( I have 1200+ fonts and use Font Agent Pro 6). I still have some email issues with the cursor not synching where it should be. I will have to post that problem separately.

Even if you don't use your Mac professionally like I do, you will get left behind at some point. Maybe your security features for banking online may not work, etc. Pages and Photos are terrible in 10.10.  I wish I could go back to 10.6.8, but I can't.

You don't have to use the new version of Pages or Photos - you can still use iWork 9 Pages and iPhoto. Just don't click on documents to open them - the default is always the new version of the app and you cannot change that, so you'll need to get in the habit of opening documents in Pages FROM pages, or dragging them to the icon for (old) Pages in the doc. You can, of course, uninstall the newer apps, but unfortunately, if you do that, you'll get nagged at least once a day to install the updated versions. The only way to stop the nags is to install them. (Very, very, bad form on Apple's part, if you ask me. They should make it so you can select which apps you want to be notified about.)
