Moving domain out of GoDaddy

About 10 years ago when ISP's were being bought and sold like used cars I decided to  secure a domain to solidify an e mail address that didn't change every time a new or different ISP came upon the scene.  

GoDaddy was the choice of the domain registrar (I do not recall the rational), no web hosting just a domain with at least 1 email, cost was about $35 bucks every 2 years including "privacy". Worked just lovely and I never really paid much attention to the renewal charges.  That is until my e mail quit working last summer. Well GD had changed somewhere along the line and I found that what I had been paying, about $18, was now $71 per annum.  Of course it now included 3 e mail addresses which I did NOT want or need.      SOOOO,
I decided it was time to change registrars.    

I think I have had root canals that were less painful than what it took to get from GoDaddy, the privacy removed, the domain unlocked,  the EPP Auth#, etc  3 days of telephone calls, e mails from the original yahoo e mail account that I used to set up the domain originally (it is still valid and tested by me, but for what ever reason GD could not get it to work) the download spread sheet with AUTH info would not download to Excel, etc etc.  

The new registrar has finally advised that the "transfer is in progress", Hopefully the last hurdle has been cleared .  Fingers crossed

Glad you discovered their attitude, at last. They've had lots of complaints the last few years. Hope you do better with the new one, whoever that is. If you don't mind, let us know who that is, there may be some here with experience with them.

Be sure to record all the pertinent info in something like 1Password, as well as a hard copy in your safety deposit box! Maybe also with a trusted, younger friend!

I had moved SWMBO's domain and web hosting to "Mackhighway" 3 or so years ago.  Have had zero issues with them, and the pricing is ok. They be the one.

If anyone else is in the same boat, I highly recommend NameCheap. I register all my clients' domains there and have moved two of them there for hosting recently as well.

GoDaddy has been awful for years - I departed when the owner supported SOPA (he did an about face when he realized he was losing serious amounts of business over it) but their constant attempts to upsell when all you want to do is renew your domain registration is enough to drive anyone bananas. I have one client, who before I got involved, unfortunately signed up for TEN years of Wordpress managed hosting at GoDaddy. I find it horrid - no cPanel, no ability to run test sites, no included email...I feel like I'm working with one hand tied behind my back on nanny-servers that won't allow me to install any WP plugin I want, won't allow me to do my OWN scheduled backups (with a backup plugin) etc. etc. And there is no refund if they want to ditch it - the only alternative is a credit to be applied towards other GoDaddy services, none of which I recommend.

Hostgator used to be good - but having been bought out by EIG (giant German firm that owns half the darned hosting companies out there now) they're now starting to bombard me with daily emails trying upsell stuff. When you've got eight different clients there, all signed up with different email accounts to get the new account discounts they offer fairly often, that's a lot of annoying email. And every time I go into Cpanel for a site hosted there, I'm greeted with popups - trying to...you guessed it...upsell me on stuff. ARGH.

Namecheap do none of this.

BTW - ASO (our host here) was bought out by EIG a couple of years ago. And now we're starting to see way more marketing emails from them, though so far, service still seems pretty good.

I had GoDaddy as my website's host for several years. This past spring I wondered why my business calls had dropped off. The site had been hacked by someone selling cut rate knock off shoes, handbags, etc.
I hired Jim Walker at tvc.net to repair the site and get me back up & running. He determined that GoDaddy had a server compromised, but they neglected to tell anyone about it. So, I moved my biz email, hosting, etc. over to TVC.
I'd highly recommend Jim if anyone has any security issues with their sites. Always a fast reply, an honest answer and prompt service. Now my site is checked nightly for any security compromises.
Like daryl, I guess I've just let GD handle the registrar, private domain, etc. for quite some time. Maybe it's time to look into that and rethink things.

I vote for MacHighway too.
I had a couple of very small issues, which they fixed promptly. They did have one site go down many many years ago, but I luckily had everything saved except a huge picture page I was coding.

They had email issues last year, bombarded with spam. They dont white or black list like Gmail or the others do, so I gave up my emails with them. I use cape cod dot net, Gmail, and comcast now, with almost zero  spam.
I do miss my domain emails, but couldn't stand the spam.  
Im hoping they will upgrade their email system, as I would love to resurrect my good old ones.

Yes, MacHighway is good, Ive been with them from almost day one.

Times change, or maybe I am just becoming an old curmudgeon. Almost 2 weeks to the day and I FINALLY have the domain moved and e mail working again. The battle with GoDaddy was extremely frustrating, and then when I finally got the domain changed and started to re-do the e mail, lo and behold I discover that I still have to have a "hosting plan", so I now have a domain (with no web site) with ONE e mail address, which is  costing almost the same price I was paying GD.

Be sure and read the small print .

Most hosting services consider the email part as an additional, secondary function for hosting a web site. Some will provide almost unlimited email addresses in order to sell their hosting services. I was actually a bit surprised that MacHighway offered an email only option. <Namecheap >not only has personal domain registrations, but they also offer private email accounts (1 mailbox: ~$10/yr). The trick is to search for something like "email only" services. Domain name registration is not what most companies do for profit, email probably isn't either. Of course, you're already paying for iCloud (with a couple of aliases possible) and who ever your ISP is provides at least one mailbox.

Well you know the story about the barn door and the horse over the horizon. Part of the problem lies in complacency. When every thing works smoothly and as expected for years vigilance be da----. I went back to my billing records and discovered that as late as 2012 I paid GD $28 for 2 years of "registration" which included one e mail address. Since I was not interested in a Web page hosting was not even a consideration. Then sometime in 2013-14 they billed my CC an additional 59 bucks for 3 business e-mails etc which went rite over my head until I did not renew it and my e-mail died.  MY BAD. I did not read the fine print at MH thusly requiring a hosting plan.  Now I can have available 2 web sites and 19 e mail addresses, which I will never use.   Oh well curmudgeonvile.

You often have 30 days to cancel these kinds of purchases with a refund. Later cancelations may not include a full refund and sometimes none at all.

Yeah I know, but I am still suffering from the last "change" go round. It ain't worth the $59, at least this year, to go thru it again. Wait till next year rite???
