What good is a USB PCI card?

Installed one about a year ago, and have yet to use it.  Nothing works on it.  

Have tried two card readers,  one Flash Link USB Reader and now an iogear 6in 1.  Neither work.  Tried a USB zip, nada.  USB Card Support 1.4.1 is installed

What do YOU use the card for?

I never had anything that didn't work with mine.

Mouse, Printer, USB Zip.

Never had a Card Reader.

Maybe you Floridians are just out of luck? wink.gif

It could be your card is just no good but make sure you have the USB Mass Storage Support extension in the system folder. If that is missing many peripherals won't work. I  have the following (though some are particular to a specific product and the Toast extensions aren't included):

Jenny, if you can't get a mouse (for instance) to work, and you do have all the extensions installed, then methinks you have a DOA card. I've had one in our beige G3 for several years - it works fine with mice, printers - everything we've thrown at it, except for a wireless USB adapter - but that thing crashed our iMac, so it's on its way back to Belkin since it appears to be defective.

What brand card?

Jen, what OS are you running?

According to the article referenced in Randy's thread you should not have 1.4.1 card support if you ave 9.1 or later.

Jen, I have two here that I was sending out to Uncle Bernie, (I was just waiting for the address) but if you need them, and he don’t mind, you can test them against what you have, use one and/or forward them on. They’re new, one was stored in the Christmas stuff in the attics, and the other got mysteriously sent out with a Christmas present. They have some miles on them but were never used. I also have the software that came with them.

I'm using 9.1 on the 6400/G3/400.  ASP recognizes the iogear reader, but when I put a card in it, it doesn't come up on the desktop.  Same thing happens with the FlashLink reader;  it's recognized in the Profiler, but not accessible.

Emails to both companies have gone unanswered.

I once put a reader belonging to HOATT, it was recognized.  A message came up saying I didn't have the necessary software and would I like to search for it?  Agreed, said no software was available.

Randy and Kris-hmmmm.....could it be I made a mistake?  Nah! dry.gif ....  I'll try uninstalling 1.4.1 card support, but I don't remember it working under 9.0 either.

wacko.gif Hi, I use a Keyspan USB pci card on my PM 8600 for my Logitech mouse and Bestdata USB modem. I have been using it for around a year without any problems.

I also use a Belkin USB hub, used to have a canon USB printer but died after I bought new ink for it, the printer head burned up. wallbash.gif

another topic, has the west nile been a problem there, last week here in OK they said 2 horse's died of the virus. As you must know this state is a wheat, horse and cow country, seen the web site you posted. My alma mater is OK State the land grant college, I worked for the Animal Science department after graduation in EE for 6 years building data acquistion systems for research.

Jen, you may have to do more than just remove 1.4.1 as it most likely overwrote the 9.1 components.

I have had virtually no problems with my USB card (USB/FW combo from CompUSA) which is now connected to an Asante 7 port hub. I have used an optical mouse, Lexar card reader, 4G external drive (removed from my PB), an 80G external and a scanner. The only problem I had at one point was with the card reader which for some reason refused to work after many months. I reinstalled the Mass Storage extension and all has been fine since.

I think I've found the problem wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif The card reader must be powered up before the computer starts for it to mount the smart media card, and it is not possible with the PCI USB card. verysad.gif

Next computer will have built in USB ports, oh yeah!
