Trouble connecting to internet after repairs...
« on: December 08, 2016, 12:48:16 PM »
We've just got our MBP back after having a replacement trackpad fitted and now can't connect to the internet.

Before taking it in I set up a new user account called "service" with its own password, and activated file vault as what I saw as a sensible safety measure. The trackpad is great, working exactly as it should. I expected the MBP (Snow Leopard) to reconnect in the same way it does after we've returned from visits - it just connects. I really can't imagine that changing a piece of hardware is going to cause this problem so wonder if my new account has upset things.

Could it be a corrupted p.list? If so, which one do I "restore" from Time Machine to get the settings right. Going through the set-up procedure, it gets as far as the "BT Hub 5" (modem-router) but can't get any further.

At the risk of sounding desperate, my missus is the MBP's main user, so I would be ever so, ever so grateful for some...    sos.gif

What shows in System Prefs->Networks? A screen shot would help, since I can't remember the exact layout/item locations/etc.

I'm thinking the repair people may have set their own network as the 'default' and they could have even made some changes in the prefs for that. I'm pretty sure we can work it out. "We" being the folks here! I'll be gone for an hour or so, but back before you get sent to bed! tongue.gif

Speaking of System Prefs > Networks, have you tried clicking Assist Me?

Unless you adjust your sleep and work schedule, we'll have to make do with questions/answers/suggestions. I'm willing to get up 15 whole minutes earlier! Are you willing to stay up 15 hours later? What a deal!!! laughhard.gif

I'm assuming you will try Jon's great suggestion by the time I see this thread tomorrow. thumbup.gif

BTW, does your "Location:" show "Automatic"?

I'm assuming you already see your own network in the "Network Name:" pop-up list? You might look at that list anyway and see if there are some names that don't look familiar. Might be worth deleting those. You can do that with the "Advanced" (button). Now, select a network name, then click the minus button (or key) to remove it.

A slightly embarrassed Highmac returns....

Seems a good night's sleep (for the MBP) helped. Switched it on this morning and logged in. It loaded away and then launched Firefox, which loaded its pages as I was preparing to start working through the various suggestions ...

Hang on - it's loading its pages..? At that point I woke up to the fact that it was connected to the internet and working normally.

Nevertheless, many thanks for the suggestions, which may well help others later on.

Many say that "Sleeping on a problem is good"! Seems to work on that side of The Pond, as well! Glad to hear things are back to "normal"! clap.gif
