"Autocorrection" is grate! I mean autokorekshun nevere fales, write?

OK, the above simply proves that I need more help than most, and the Mac usually does fine correcting my extremely poor spelling skills. But there are times when I want to spell a word in a particular way. The "normal" way is to either leave the little red underlining. But the kind folks at Apple have designed a way to "have things our way"... sometimes.

For example, suppose you have a screen name like "xabd". First, I urge you to cease and desist, or you will be hearing from my lawyers! But with just a bit of typing in System Prefs->Keyboard/Text tab will stop the annoying red underlining. Simply click the "+" button, type in the characters you want to use (without erer notification), hit the tab key and enter exactly the same characters. Wah Lah! Your Mac now 'knows' you want that collection of characters in that particular order. Thank you very much! No third-party typing/text-insertion app required. clap.gif

Just another reason to look through System Prefs to see what might be useful! What's your favorite System Pref? How have you changed settings that make using your Mac easier? Will iOS ever catch up? rolleyes.gif

Don't know if it works on other apps but in Textedit, hold down Ctrl with the cursor in the word and it gives you dropdown that includes Add to dictionary. I use it all the time putting a u into words where they are left out and replacing z with an s ... smile.gif

Good to know. I have a love/hate relationship with AutoCorrect. It's very useful when it works, but when it's stubbornly insisting something ain't right, then it's annoying. The one I've stumbled across lately is a new one on me - typing domain names into my favourite WhoIs lookup it keeps putting spaces in domains with names. I realize it might recognize these people's names, but really? In a URL?? Argh.

Actually, Jim, going to prefs as you suggested directed me to the language dropdown, which gives the option of "British English".

Apparently it's a case of knowing that, but forgetting it completely. Our 2010 MBP is set up for British English...

The options include Canadian English, Indian English, Singapore English and..... Japanese English  Thinking.gif

Amazingly, my 'language' is left at "Automatic"! That may be the reason I'm not 'warned' about an extra "u" or a misplaced* "z"/"s"?

"English options" An indication of the massive influence of American Media. rolleyes.gif We use distracting sub-titles, the rest of the world just learns another language.

* Another great example of the wonders of English... when to have two ss's  (sses?) and when not. In other wurdz, a grate example of speling diferenses en English?laughhard.gif
