Do not disturb
« on: February 14, 2018, 05:02:57 PM »
I need help. I used to set all my gadgets to "do not disturb" overnight, with the exception of my kids phone numbers. That worked grand until a few weeks ago when, due to a glitch in the alert system, there was a Tsunami watch issued in the wee hours that only went to cell phones and not land lines. (Yes, I have one. It's the only way to get internet where I live.) With my cell on "don't disturb" I learned about the whole thing long after it was cancelled. I considered adding the emergency number to my exception list, but that won't work as they have a block of numbers and won't give them out to the public, so I have no clue what numbers to add to the exception list.

At this point, I've turned off "do not disturb" for my own safety; and that's where my problem now lies ... I have 3 wonderful pals that send out an early text to our group. A quick word of encouragement, I'm praying for you, sometimes a photo of the sunrise, but these come in before I'm up and around and now I'm waking up at 5:30-6am. YAWN!

How do I set this  "do not disturb" so that I get the emergency alerts at any hour, but the other texts/emails don't disturb me until a civilized hour?

(PS: And please don't suggest I tell them not to send until it's convenient for me. That's not a helpful solutions. wink.gif )

Seems the “Do not disturb” function was not designed for situations like yours. sad.gif It doesn’t help that the warning agency won’t publish their numbers. Not sure how that helps anyone, including them.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Agree, but it has something to do with homeland security.  dntknw.gif

Maybe you should just always stay on the high ground? wallbash.gif

Sorry I can't see any way to use this function in a more granular fashion. I don't even remember setting up anything in it. I did see that I have it set to automatically put the 'sign on the door' from 10pm until 7am. I have but a few "Favorites", just family.

Fortunately, we have very few Tsunamis around here, but there are tornado warnings, usually with only minutes to respond. Phone chains would be of little help, but there are very loud sirens... no phones even needed. Does your area have those, also? Low tech, but usually affective if they are loud and numerous enough. dntknw.gif

Just read:

Additionally, in iOS 12, ... Do Not Disturb improvements that will give users more options to automatically reject phone calls or silence notifications
I wouldn't hold my breath that they will address your particular question, of course... rolleyes.gif

We used to, but they stopped functioning and either couldn't be fixed, or the cost was prohibitive--I can't remember which. So now it's the landline and cell phone notification only. In the best of situations rolleyes.gif the fire department is going to drive around town and use sirens and loud speakers to warn us all. I'm not counting on that.  laugh.gif

You're probably correct.  eek2.gif
