Hi, Everyone and happy Friday!

I wanted to join an online group and one option was to sign in with FacePlant,  ummmm, I FaceBlast....no, I mean FaceBook!  
I don't want to do the FB thing--even with my limited knowledge, I did join FB a short while ago for access to a cooking/baking group, and ended up saying my farewells because the group was just too busy busy busy.  

The other option have for participation is to download Java for Mac OS X and access it that way.
I wish things were as simple as register, give your email address and pick a PW, then log in with your name and PW, but nope, I apparently need FB or Java.

Here's the info in a screenshot--am I going to run into any problems with doing this download? Should I just forget about it?

I don't recommend Java for any Mac user unless they have a real need. There are some apps that actually use Java and, if you run a business that requires that kind of app, the question is moot. I used to have a financial/bookkeeping app that used Java, but it has been years since I replaced it. OTOH, I still have Java installed, for old time's sake! laughhard.gif

Oracle bought the Java group many years ago and the do a fine job of supporting it. If I had the choice between FB or Java, I'd probably decide on latter. I did re-join FB a couple of weeks ago and have been sorry for it nearly ever day. I wanted to join a private group and never go anywhere else there, but I'm thinking of cutting a piece is card stock to cover the majority of the browser window so I don't have to see all the other junk. rolleyes.gif

I've never had any problems attributable to Java and updating it is very easy. I hope it works well for your needs with that group.

Sooz, I don't recommend joining anything with your FB profile. Just read all the recent news articles about how this opens you up to all kinds of not so kind things.

Now, would you be willing to share the link to this group so that we could take a look at it and see what crops us for us? If you don't want to post it here publicly, drop a PM to myself or xABD and we'll work on it from there.

Thank you both for your replies!  I have stopped my FB stuff, for the many reasons already listed.  As for the baking group I was in, which necessitated my having a FB page, I quit that and found another forum that is fairly active and not affiliated to any FB stuff.

I repeat, once again, that FB is not convenient for activities like keeping or discussing specific topics or problems in a logical, usable context such as run-on sentences, placement of commas, grammar, etc. and abbreviations. scram.gif

Now ... what is the baking group at FB, and what is the other forum? I totally need laugh.gif another outlet for my cooking/baking habit.

Really? You don't remember when Oracle thought it just ducky to package the Java updates with malware that installed browser "helpers" that redirected all your searches to Yahoo? If you were in a rush and just clicking through the install process, it was REALLY easy not to notice the checkbox, already checked, that installed all that garbage. I think they've stopped doing that lately, but it left a really bad tasted in my mouth. I think we had to help a few people here get all that stuff uninstalled, too...

Anyway - I'm actually a little perturbed that there is any web forum/group out there that is still coded in such a way as to require Java enabled by end users. Please send me the link, Sooz - I want to have a look. Curiosity and all that... wink.gif I haven't come across a site that required it in eons - it's pretty much a no-no these days because of security issues.

It is possible that the requirement is for javascript rather than Java. They are often confused and I don't think even Java has as much "bad taste" as javascript! rolleyes.gif Fortunately, CSS3 and html5 are taking over a lot of the needs of that hacker-loved malware...

Quite a few businesses use Java apps, but they are very rare in consumer areas. It's been a decade or more since I've seen anything requiring it. It's much more rare than Flash and there are still people using that! Not on an iDevice, of course...

When I visited the forum page, I received no alert about Java, but I did when I tried to use their online realtime chat room, which is Java based; but I found another option that Sooz can use if she wants to to use the chat room: "Mobile/HTML".

Awww, you folks are so funny!  As it happens, I don't need to use Java (thanks, Kimmer, for checking it out for me). The baking FB group was ...special -- you needed to be invited and I got an invite in a round about way.

For all your baking needs, Jim, try cakecentral.com, although it seems slow in terms of people posting. But hey, I have that super intrusive FB.... friend me! (NOT!)

I too, use FacePlant, great wording!!!, as that is the way our beach community talks with each other. And also a Yellow Lab FB page is tons of fun.
I also am involved in placing homeless and lost dogs, and they use FB too.

Seems you cant get away from FB nowadays, as so many people use it as their only means of communication. Businesses too, local ones get referrals all the time.
Also our police and fire departments.

FB has taken over a huge chunk of communications, probably because its so darn easy.

I belong to a cooking site too, but they havent gone over to FB yet, they still do the email and have their blog.

Also if you do sign up, dont put in your stuff like the correct birthday, fudge all that stuff.

Jane, I didn't know you were involved with "dog rescue" -- it must be so rewarding to find homes for them! (I think Yellow Labs and Golden Retrievers are often the 'big' clowns of the dog world!)

Thankfully there are enough cooking sites around that I don't need to do any "Face Plant" stuff, and thanks for the caution about fudging when signing up for it--when I did that FB baking group, I used my nom de plume, and also used a backup birthday (my birth year makes me ever so much younger ! LOL).
