MBP RIP - Replacement help, What to do
« on: May 28, 2018, 09:16:09 PM »

My 512mb late 2011 MBP has died.  Never to be resurrected?

I think it is the logic board or graphics thingy.  But is has been replaced for free by Apple once and that warranty recall has run out.

Questions:

Reball?  Is this a solution that works?
Buy a new one?  I use my MBP for Lightroom, Wordpress, iMovie, MS Office, Facebook and emails. Could I do this on an iPad with a keyboard?  Can I attach a 1tb ext HD and even an ext disk drive to an iPad?  Probably not to the latter.

New ones don't seem to have much storage.  I have backed up and in an ideal world I would not to just restore the lot.  If the "new to me" one has smaller memory, can I use time machine just to cherry pick what I want off the backup?

Buy a refurb?  Most don't have any storage either.  I found Macbank.co.uk who have good reviews on Trustpilot but not a huge range.

I seem to have got left behind in the last few years so I don't really know what is available.

HELP!

Feel your pain... my wife's MBP of the same vintage, storage capacity, and repair history, went belly up about 4 months ago....  We debated the same questions, minus the iPad solutions, and finally decided to go with a new 15in, 256gb model.  She uses it primarily for Word, photo editing for Geneology, and mail. We have an ext. 2tb drive for backup using Super Duper, on a nonscheduled basis.

As far as your iPad questions someone else will need to chime in on that.  I do have a newer iPad Pro, but no extra items hanging off it.  It's backed up via iTunes to my 27" iMac on an irregular basis.

Frances, in theory, you can use an iPad to do a lot of things - especially if you don't mind doing just about everything in the cloud (ie: Lightroom, Office, etc.) and storing all your pics, movies and documents there. There are even really big flash drives with lightning connectors (see: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-iXpand-Fla...sh+Drive+256GB)

But...it would mean learning a whole different way of working and I'm not sure where the gotchas are, since I have never attempted such a wholesale move to iOS. It isn't really designed to be a complete replacement for a computer/MacOS, so I suspect there are some major holes here and there. Plus, if you want the full Lightroom on an iPad you have to subscribe to Adobe's CC. I'm flatly refusing to do that as long as my perpetual license LR 6 continues to work. After that, I'm hoping there will be acceptable alternatives. :P

For some of the issues, see: https://michaelkummer.com/technology/ipad-p...ace-12-macbook/

I'd recommend going the refurb route - we've gotten many of them over the years and apart from one pixel on my 27" 5K iMac (which wouldn't be an acceptable replacement reason on a non-refurb either) they've been perfect. Macbank's refurbs look a bit long in the tooth to me - the 15" MBP 2.2GHz retina model is from 2015 and is $1449...the same one as the Apple Refurb store sells for 1609, with no previous user...I guess it depends whether you get one that is in A-1 condition or one that is more a "B"... the warranty offered by Macbank is the same as that offered by Apple, so that's good.

How much storage does your current MBP have? Is it 13" or 15" (you need to update your equipment profile there - it's seriously out of date, methinks - plus lacking in some key info!)?

If you want the 15" model, I'd recommend going with one of the 2017 models in the refurb store - and if you can swing it, I'd go for the one with the discrete graphics: https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/FPTU2...-display-Silver - you can always add external storage, but you can't change the graphics card!

My iMac has a 1TB SSD, so I'm limited on storage with it too - (yes, I have a LOT of photos!) so keep all photos on an external drive to use with LR. That way, I can use it with both the MBP, which only has a 750GB SSD and with the iMac, since Adobe, in their stupidity, have never made Lightroom usable with network attached storage.     (Methinks it's all a plot to get people to use CC and their cloud storage...) Anyway - you are correct; storage on laptops these days is definitely limited - mostly, I think, because most people don't need that much day-to-day.

As for selectively installing things from your backup, yes, you can certainly do that.

My husband went from a late 2006 Macbook Pro to a new Retina touch bar 2017 model last spring. He seems very happy with it.

BTW - here's another piece from someone who went the iPad route: https://www.zdnet.com/article/ipad-pro-vs-m...ng-term-review/

I'm assuming here that your iMac is no longer in service (or so long in the tooth that it's not part of the consideration?) Another option is get an iMac and use that for the heavy lifting and get an iPad for the stuff that's in the cloud anyway; email, quick updates to websites etc. But that won't be cheaper - but you can get more storage and a bigger display, which is much better for photo and video. (I would recommend the 4K model over the non-4K model - screen is gorgeous and well worth the extra $200)

Thank you for all your advice.

Hugely appreciated, as ever (I love this board).

In the end I put an advert in our local forum for all things Shetland and someone replied.

I bought - MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with 16gb ram and 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, and 250gb SSD memory.

It has been turned on precisely 42 times so hopefully that is good.

I am just now going through the process of trying to get my backup back on but the only problem is that mine is a 250gb SSD memory as opposed to the 516 one I had so the back up is slightly bigger (330gb) than the new memory.

I also have to try and work so that I dont use my Mac for storage and shift my photos onto a ext HD.  But I can do that if I am organised.

Just discovered daughter has a 1tb SSD HD so might try and do a swap if they are compatible!

Only put your most used apps on the MBP. Keep all image files and other apps on the external. If you have USB 3 or better, you'll hardly notice the difference. ;)

Well, apparently it's EASY to swap out the SSD on a 15" 2015 MBP! Who knew...??

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15...placement/48251

Just make sure it takes the same sort of SSD - what year is daughter's 1TB SSD? Starting in 2013, Apple started offering 1TB SSDs as an option. Horrid price (and they still are - buying a new one isn't cheap judging by this: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/mac...splay/2012-2013 )

So yeah- I'd go for it, if it's the same type! (2012s were different from the ones that came after - but if your daughter has a 1TB SSD, it's not a 2012, because they didn't have them then.)

Thanks - once I have got my MBP back into working order, I will have a look at daughter's if she will let me.
