6400 video trouble
« on: July 31, 2003, 04:11:57 PM »
I have a problem with a Performa 6400 that I need help solving.  I'm trying to fix it by long distance, so it's pretty difficult.  When she turns the computer on, the monitor doesn't, it appears that there's no video output to the monitor at all.  Is it possible that the video port has gone bad?  This is the second monitor that's been tried.  And if it is the monitor port, would a PCI graphics card solve the problem?  A 6400's a great machine, but used macs are so inexpensive these days, would that be a better way to go, just swapping out the HD?

Gegg:

First, is the monitor a VGA?  If so, did you use a VGA to Mac adapter?  A VGA monitor needs a Mac adapter.  If you used two monitors to test the video signal, did you use a different monitor cables?  Cables can go bad too.

If the onboard video is kaput, a PCI video card will work, as long as you use the proper driver.

As for the HD question, I'm not sure what your asking.  If you mean, can you replace the hard drive, sure you can.  If you only have one drive and the new drive doesn't have a system folder on it, then you'll need to install one from the System CDs.  Be sure to backup anything you what to keep from the old drive.  Or you can add the new drive as a second HD (making sure to set one as the master and the other as the slave).

Thanks, all for the suggestions. I just found out that it's probably a bigger problem than the video.  Apparently, the computer chimes on, and then shuts itself back down again.  Looks like it might be replacement time.

IAWK - I agree with Kelly, try the PRAM battery, simplest things first.  Even try zapping the pram.
