OK... ANOTHER issue...
« on: July 29, 2018, 05:58:27 PM »
... why not??? I can take it!  :losemarbles: :why-me:

A set of speakers I bought with my Airmiles to use with my iPad suddenly when I plugged the iPad in does not recognize the iPad so it won't work. It's looking for an iPod... it says "no iPod"... well no stupid, but this the same iPad I've been using here for several years now! What gives?

I could assume it's an issue with the speakers and it might be... but after everything else it's just too much of a co-inky-dinc. Any ideas of why my iPad may not be recognized?

Oh... before someone should ask... no I don't have iOS 11 and it's never mattered... separately powered from another outlet, non-apple speakers.

Well... NOW it's playing... it stills says USB iPod, but it's playing...  :dntknw: :losemarbles:
All I did was restore my iPad from my encrypted, saves all data etc. backup and I have tunes!

It gave me a heart attack for a minute though... when the iPad restarted it said "slide to upgrade"... I thought "you dirty *&#@&! You got me on the iOS 11 even though I restored from a backup, but when it started it was still iOS 9.3.5.
I'll deal with that one later!

I have NO idea what gave, but it appears it was an iPad issue... something was probably corrupted, why not??? I just made that backup day before yesterday... glad I did.  :whoosh:

Just by way of interest... it seems an "iPod Plist" was created in my Home Library Preferences directory yesterday. Not sure what triggered that... my restoration of my iPad or by the iPad itself when I plugged it into my MBP... anyway "the day the music died but came back"...

Just curious...why are you not running the most recent version of iOS on the iPad? The one you're using is from 2 years ago. As far as I can tell, iOS 11 is compatible with 10.11.

Generally, unless you have hardware constraints, or serious application constraints, I recommend keeping operating systems up to date. You don't have to live on the bleeding edge and update the day the new version becomes available, but once the dust has settled? Usually a good idea. Of course, those of us facing the upcoming 64-bit dilemma in a year or so will have to make some decisions; I definitely have some 32-bit software that I still actively use and for which I may not have substitutes or updates - including Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Pro. I can buy PDFPen Pro and get most of the capabilities of Acrobat Pro (which is a whopping $450 USD or $15 USD a month on a yearly subscription) but so far, there is no adequate replacement for InDesign and I NEED that. Affinity are supposed to be releasing Affinity Publisher in beta at the end of this month - I certainly hope that it becomes a capable alternative, because I really, really, do not want to have to pay $50 USD a month to use Creative Cloud. :(

Apparently Microsoft Office 2016 will get updated to 64-bit in the August update - so that's good, as I need that one too.

Depending on what happens, I may have to run a pared down Sierra on an external drive to continue using some apps for specific projects. Not looking forward to that possibility - will get an external SSD if it comes to that, I guess. :(

I would love for you to start a thread on how to set this up. I'd even run pared down El Cap.

Hi Paddy... :)

I guess the main thing holding me back from iOS 11 is just not being sure of what to expect. For example I happen to really like and depend on being able to sync my apps in iTunes when I connect my iPad. That's also why I have stayed at iTunes 12.6.2. I like to be able to transfer files to apps especially. Also I see exactly what apps are in my Library and can choose to install or uninstall some when I want to. The idea of digging through the "I don't know how many" I've tried from the App store when I look at purchased makes me want to hide in the corner. I've started keeping "complete" backups of my iPad... encrypted so it saves all the data in my app etc. I hope it does anyway, I saw somewhere that it does save everything if you make regular backups to your computer using encryption.

The point for me is that if I were to lose the data in my apps and not be able to transfer files easily by adding them it iTunes, it's going to severely limit the use of my iPad. I still haven't nor do I intend to soon, signed up to iCloud. So the only thing I have that I can save some things to is Dropbox, I do use that. However if any app on my iPad were to mess up and I couldn't restore it other than digging through hundreds of purchased apps in the App store and then not have the things I've already done available to me I'd probably end up trashing the app... it will limit how and how much I use my iPad. That is unless it's an app that allows storing stuff in Dropbox. I'm just so unsure of iOS 11 that right now it's holding me back. My sister upgraded and says she hates it... I dunno, hopefully she's gotten used to it so she can tell me a thing or two. IMO it was a STUPID move to take apps out of iTunes for syncing... but that's just my opinion. ;) I get the idea of trying to streamline things, however they've done it one way for a long time now, to change it suddenly is crap and especially without a good explanation of how to do without it. "You can re-download any app you've purchased in App store." and that's it. Yeah? With all my data etc intact... oh we kinda didn't think that was important. Anyway if a full encrypted back up on my computer of my iPad will do it, OK but it is just one more thing one has to remember to do now. This is what I've seen online... how to preserve your data, I haven't seen or heard that it actually works though.

I think I agree with kimmer... I will probably run some sort of El Capitan clone on an external drive. I run PhotoShop CS6 and that's all... I don't have any use for more and I'm not interested in Creative Suite at a monthly charge at all. I've been looking for a PhotoShop alternative... the nicest one I've seen is for Windows only. What a surprise!
