Until recently, [the problems with hard drives have not been] obvious to consumers, because disk-drive manufacturers were able to ... add more heads and platters to each unit, enabling a higher capacity in the same size package. But now both the available space and the cost of adding more heads and platters are limiting the gains that drive manufacturers can make, and the plateau is starting to become apparent.

Surprise, surprise. Only problem...tape does deteriorate. (30-40 years for today's tape is about it) So do DVDs and CDs - they say 100 years for them - but quality varies there too and I know of some that have deteriorated in less than a decade.

Paper...acid free (of course!) and stored in cool, dry conditions, lasts centuries.
