audio/x-pn-realaudio plug-in
« on: August 25, 2003, 10:26:14 AM »
Could someone please advise me on the audio/x-pn realaudio plug-in?  I have attempted to play audio clips but get a message that I need the above plug-in.  When I go to Explorer preferences, I find that audio/x-pn-realaudio is listed as a 'helper' for the RealOne player that I installed.  Are helpers and plug-ins not the same thing?  If not, where can I find the plug-in?  I have been looking for 2 days now!  My son's band has a new web site that offers song clips but I can't hear them sad.gif

Thanks for any help.

Hello sharqueen. Welcome to the Forum. smile.gif

From IE Support.

"What's the difference between a helper application and a plug-in?

When a helper application  is envoked, the movie, audio, or other "dynamic" data is displayed in the helper application window rather than in the Internet Explorer window. When a plug-in is invoked the file can be displayed inside the Internet Explorer window."

Check out the other information there.

What machine and OS are you using? smile.gif

Hi Kelly and thanks for the welcome.

I have a little imac and I'm using OS X.2.  I'm very low-tech to put it mildly.  All I want to do is be able to hear the sound clips on my son's band's web page and now I'm going nuts reading things I don't understand and trying to make the sound clips work!  T

OK, I just checked my Explorer preferences again and not only is audio/x-pn-realaudio a helper it is also listed as being a plug-in.  I'm too confused! If I already have the plug-in I can't figure our why the sound won't work and I continue to get the msg. that I need the plug-in!!!

Hi Sharon. smile.gif

I believe that when you click on a RalPlayer link in your Browser it

should launch the RealPlayer.

Doesn't that work?

What version do you have? Do you know?

It used to be free but I think you have to pay for it now.

Ok, I have the RealOne player for OS X and I also downloaded RealPlayer 8.  I don't know if one superceded the other or what.  I did go to the page you suggested and tried a clip-which worked.   I'm beginning to think that the plug in I need doesn't exist.  Will you try www.akalevel.com and see if it works for you?  Go to 'sounds' and then click on one of the songs.  I really appreciate it.

Many thanx

Sharon. I don't use RealPlayer or RealOne. smile.gif

RealPlayer 8 and 9 seem to be older Apps for the "Classic" OS.

Do you ever Boot your machine in OS 9.x?

Maybe that version would work for you? smile.gif

Took a short cut to the sound page bypassing that 370kb flash on the main.
 http://www.akalevel.com/tunes.html

Received the same message no matter whether I had the plugin or not.
Could it be the page and how it was written?
