iMac 333mhz and OS X
« on: August 04, 2003, 07:47:04 AM »
My brother-in-law wants to try OS X.  He doesn't use his computer for much more than surfing the Internet, but he can't udate AOL without OS X.  Right now he has 320 megs of Ram.  How do you think it will run?

I think it will run. smile.gif

Depends on your/his expectations.

Max the RAM.

Ok. 320 MBs is good.

"The exact amount a Rev. A-D iMac can be upgraded varies from unit to unit. We have field reports of some models accepting 256 MB modules in both memory socket and reaching 512 MB -- and other reports of early iMacs that won't work at all with 256 MB modules. There appears to be no way to know in advance whether a particular iMac will work with a certain sized memory module."

I'm running Jaguar just fine on my office G3/Beige/266MHz with 512 Megs.  I'm not able to run the DVD player stuff (need an add on video card to do that) and I've had a great deal of trouble getting the CD burner to work doing anything except music CD's (even though the System Profiler says it is fully supported).  But all I have to do is drop back to OS 9.2.2 and run Toast!

danf63, I ran OS X on my iMac 333 with 160mb of ram before buying a PowerMac.  I agree with Kelly to max out the ram if possible.  For what your brother will be using it for, it should do fine.  You may need to do a firmware update before updating to OS X if I am remembering right.  I believe there is a post floating around in the TS archives about it.

Thanks everyone.  We'll install it and see how it goes.  I'll keep you updated.
