What did I do to my Log In screen?!

Using macOS 10.13 High Sierra:
I would have sworn that for the last few years (not days or months, but years!) my log in screen had only one choice; my login name, picture and a single password entry field. OK, there was also a "Restart" and "Shutdown" button.

However, for the past 10+ days, I now see an "Other..." choice. I have tried every combination of Login Options available and cannot get rid of that extra choice in any satisfactory way.

I can get rid of all pictures and names by setting the Prefs to "Name and Password" regardless of the remaining options. However, that now requires two text fields, with the accompanying extra keystrokes.

By using the "List of users" method, I can have only the Password field show. But now, I have to press either the "left" or "up" arrow key to select which user I want (No one at our house is named "Other", so I always want me... ). That is only one extra keystroke, but it's just not what I've had to do until recently! Who changed that?

Please tell me that I am not losing my mind and that you have exactly the same display in High Sierra.

The only thing that seems related is the now constant nagging from iCloud to set up two-factor authentication. That happened not long ago... It also seems to force System Prefs to always open with iCloud prefs.

Boy, xABD, I hope you appreciate this    but I just suffered through a restart just for you. HAHA

My macOS 10.13 High Sierra log in screen is the same as always: my two id's (admin and user) shown as my login name, picture and a single password entry field. At the bottom of the screen I see "sleep - restart - shut down." No option for "Other"; and no nag from iCloud to set to set up two-factor authentication.

Please tell me that I am not losing my mind and that you have exactly the same display in High Sierra.

In Terminal (either the app or in PathFinder) type:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWOTHERUSERS_MANAGED -bool FALSEThis leaves "Guest User" in the Other Users list, but that 'user' is disabled, anyway.

My Log in screen is now like it always was!

And, despite of the settings in System Prefs, I never see "Sleep" as an option at Log in nor Restart. I can use a 'hot corner' for that. And the screen automatically goes blank almost as fast as my brain. Nor am I worried about 'sleeping' the Log In screen.

Are you saying you have two images/pictures/users on the Log in screen?

That's not on my Log in screen, it's just a super-glued notification on the System Prefs icon in the Dock (which is normally hidden, anyway). But due to that 'requested action' ("Mama Apple says you should set up Two-Factor Authentication if you know what's good for you even if it is inconvenient and annoying" ), System Prefs now always opens with the iCloud prefs, no matter what Pref you last used...

Yes, I have my user account, and an admin account. See attachment.

OK, you are using the recommended “don’t normally run as an Admin” method. I’m too lazy for that! I use the “do as I say not as I do” method!

Did you, by any chance, have root enabled, Jim?

I haven't seen this issue - and I have two other accounts which show at login; one a test account and one where I dumped a bunch of stuff for my hubby when he was updating to a new(er) machine a few years ago. I need to delete that one - everything in it is 4+ years old and has never been needed. No "Other" account, though there is a Guest account, but it doesn't show up at login.

And like you, Jim - I run in administrator mode. And flat out refuse to enable two-factor ID. My life is complicated enough with the 900+ passwords stored in 1Password and I'm no fan of making it reliant on having my iPhone handy. It is not strapped to my being. It is not an appendage. I really wish Apple would stop nagging me too - it's downright infuriating that we can't turn that off.

No, I did not have Root enabled (and I did check), I may be crazy, but I'm not (extremely) stupid! I had a (too) long initial post and in it I mentioned finding the 'Root enabled' suggestions.

I like having only one 'user' on the login (and wake up) screen. It saves one entire keystroke(!) since I don't have to 'activate' one of the users (although I assume the tab key also works ). As soon as I can see the log in screen, the cursor is already sitting in the password field waiting patiently on my input. "Arrow keys have better uses!"
