I know I asked this before on the old software, but I can't find the thread; plus things change so fast the recommendations might be different now. My question:

I need an external dvd player for my iMac (27-inch, mid 2011, running 10.13.6 and not upgradeable to Mojave). Doubtful I'll ever actually watch a movie on my iMac, but I need to be able to load dvd's from other sources so that I can pull a video from the dvd for church services. Sometimes I can find the vid online, but not always.

Anyhow, what player would you recommend? TIA.

Don't find a thread either, it may be back on the old forum? And I don't think we have archives for 2010 on. :no2: :tears:

I haven't bought one in over 5 years, but I doubt they've changed much! My only recommendation/opinion is to get one that has a wall-wart. You can get one that uses USB only, but you may need to use two ports on the computer. If you have plenty, that may be fine, otherwise get one that has an external power supply.

I have used Apple's USB SuperDrive for several years. It will play and burn both CDs and DVDs, and I have never had a problem with it.

Your title and question don't mention "burning" or writing. Are you sure you'll never need that? :Thinking:

I did see a player for $1.99, but I'd round that up to $2.00, just to be safe. :coolio: You could buy six of those to save shipping time when they start breaking... and you might get a volume discount! :rofl:

Sorry, I've been busy and not able to get back to you. I can still burn and write to a CD with my iMac's built in CD/DVD slot -- and I haven't burned a CD in over 5 years. I do use it to put new music into iTunes when I have to buy a physical CD. However, this slot/hardware no longer recognizes DVD's and that's what I need to be able to do.

There is no reason to spend serious money on one of these - they've been cheap as dirt for years now as PC components - and since they run off USB power, there is no separate power supply required. I wouldn't bother paying more for one with an external supply - mine runs fine off a hub most of the time - as long as something else on the hub doesn't get greedy. Slapping them in an external case isn't rocket science.

No complaints about mine - do note that the USB cord is pretty short, but I had no difficulty with that. There are oodles of the same one with various different brands slapped on them on Amazon - here's one:

Thanks, Paddy. I'd looked at one of those, I'll look at both now and make a purchase. It's nuts to have to pop these dvd's in my TV blu-ray player, watch and get info and then have to search on the web for the downloadable video.  :wacko:
