multiple autofill in Safari?
« on: March 26, 2019, 10:36:43 AM »
My wife and I share the same account in our computer. We use Safari's Autofill and find it very convenient, but, by default, it fills in my name instead of hers (yes, we have the same address). Is there any way to have it list both names as a choice? (She can change my name to hers when it has autofilled, but that can be a PITA.)

We don't want to set up a separate account for her because that, potentially, is more trouble than it's worth.

On a related topic, our Discover Card account (we both have our own cards) has the same number for both of us. Safari > Preferences > Autofill will allow me to add a card, but because it's the same number, only one entry will be available, either my name or my wife's. Is there a way to force it to accept both names with the same number?

Jon, the only thing I could find on that subject that looked even remotely helpful:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5251378

Haven't tried it myself because I'm the only user of my two Macs. Hubby has his own. ;)

I use Safari autofill for some things, but use 1Password (I own the perpetual license* version, which they still sell, though they don't advertise that or make it obvious: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/90941/no-more-perpetual-license-option-for-mac-os and then click the link to do the in-app purchase if you're interested. Jim is another active 1PW user.) at least 50% of the time. With over 700 passwords for my stuff and all my clients sites/domain registrations/hosting accounts/mail accounts I'd be entirely lost without it. Certainly wouldn't trust a browser for all that!! :p

*Both my husband and I have access to the same 1PW database via Dropbox. If we had the subscription version, we'd be paying $4.99 USD/mo for the family version and that would very quickly outstrip what I pay for the perpetual license, and I don't need the extra whistles and bells associated with the subscription version.

Although I've never actually done it. I was under the impression that each User account had all their prefs, documents, files in their own "Home" folder. I assumed this meant that even though an app might be used by different Users, they would each have their own settings for it. I thought that is why my prefs are in my user/Library as opposed to the other (System) "Libraries". That seems to be what you want, Jon; separate storage for you and any other User account. :dntknw:  I am aware that each User can have apps that only they can use; each User has a 'personal' "Applications" folder.

Having separate User accounts would require each of you to log in to the Mac, but I assume you trust each other to not "mess" with each others details. And 'fast User switching' seems taylor made for multiple people to use the same machine (one at a time, of course!) I am also assuming (getting extremely far out on this "limb") that the AutoFill function in Safari would be included in this "per-User" method. I never bought into using any browsers password storage system, even Apple's. Just like I always used URLM Pro to store bookmarks; all browsers use a separate, secure system not dependent on browser compatibilities.

My wife and I don't want separate User accounts so, unless something other solution appears, we're stuck with this.
