LG monitor
« on: April 25, 2019, 10:26:24 PM »
My wife’s LG Flatron W2040T monitor for her Mac Mini is stuck in power save mode. Tried troubleshooting tips in the LG guide book. No success. Is there a way to get it working again or does she need a new monitor?

I can't make any suggestions about the monitor itself, but is there a way to contact tech support at LG?

My first thought is to unplug the monitor (and its connection to the computer) and leave it off for at least 5 minutes. While you wait, re-read the manual as to how to connect it to what and in what order. Then check to see if there are any software/firmware updates.

I'm sure most of those steps are already at their absolutely HUGE support web site. Offers "Chat", Email and Phone options plus PDF versions of all manuals. BTW, be sure to have the serial number handy, there are literally hundreds of monitor models...

LG has a good 24 hour support line.

1-888-542-2623

I know, because the idiots at Rogers tried to tell me that it was our TV and not their Nextbox that was the problem 2 nights ago. (it wasn't - of course - but they gave me 6 months of HBO/Crave for free for my trouble when I called Rogers back again. PVR needs replacing - again. 3rd time in 2 years - losing all the recordings, of course  <_<)

Bottom line: the monitor isn't receiving a signal.

Have you tried a different cable? Do you have another monitor handy, or can you borrow one, to make sure it's the monitor and not the computer? Because it's also possible that it's the Mac Mini video output not working - and you can't know that unless you test somehow.

Another alternative is to the monitor to a friend or neighbour to try on their computer (PC or Mac - doesn't matter if it has DVI or VGA, at least you can rule out the monitor, though if you can't test the DVI, then you can't rule that out). Unfortunately, you'd need an adapter (DVI or VGA to USB 2) to test the monitor yourself on your other two Macs, as neither have suitable ports, unless the MBP is a lot older than I think it is. And then there is always the potential dodgy adapter issue; it's best to avoid adding another possible cause into the mix!

Yesterday after going to the LG support page and trouble shooting what we could, unplugging cords several times, pushing various monitor buttons, turning off and on, et al, we went to sleep. My wife turned it on this morning hoping to check here for advice and guess what? Everything was working as normal! Case closed.
Love that technology. Some days it's magic. Other days you want to blow it up!
Thank you all... again!

Glad it's working again, but not exactly a "how to" for the next time. :wallbash:

During the "activities" did you happen to (even accidentally) wiggle or unplug any cables?
How long was the monitor off?
Do you normally turn it off manually(?) each day?

I know you are being facetious, but there is no "magic" in electronics, so the problem is gone but certainly not "closed". The fix is simply unknown. :dntknw: :no2:

Just a plug (pun intended  :) ) for LG's customer service (UK branch).

Bought a 27in 4K monitor to extend desktop of the MBP. Couple of months down the line, after 52 hours use, one of the backlights failed. The vendor recommended contacting LG service directly ("they're usually pretty good"). That proved to be true. Ideally, there should not be problems with a new device but, realistically, there can be. How the company deals with the problems is the true measure of its customer-service philosophy.

LG have a good setup for reporting warranty problems and I was able to attach an iPhone photo of the fault. After providing proof of purchase, a courier was sent with suitable packaging to take the monitor away. I got an email to tell me it had arrived at the workshop, then another telling me it was being repaired. Finally a message that it was on its way back by courier and giving a timeslot for delivery.

It was returned within a week of being picked up. That, for me, is good service.

Thanks all.
Right now it is working as it should. We don't know why it would not turn on for a day. We won't be concerned unless it happens again.

Good to hear about LG service. Will keep that in mind.

Hate to keep harping on details, but there are a few questions in my last post that might help "the next time"...
