How about this?
« Reply #15 on: August 01, 2003, 10:40:45 PM »
Thanks to everyone for checking!
Here is what I got on OS 9.2.2
August 1, 2003 11:30 pm
with Netscape 7.0, I get static at the top and you can scroll down and get the Cooper again, but never shows entry form

earlier with iCab, I got only static,
now I get static at the top, and the whole Cooper in the middle, and black at the bottom with part of entry form showing in the black section

Now IE loads the static, and then shows the Cooper
and has entry form super imposed on the Cooper

Opera loads static, and then shows the Cooper
and has entry form super imposed on the Cooper
Opera goes to rules

Mozilla flashed the car, then loaded static, and has part of the Cooper at the bottom, but never shows entry form

Netscape Communicator 4.7
loads the Cooper, then brief static, then goes to black, and you can scroll down and get the Cooper again, but never shows entry form

And I thought there were standards for browsers ect!

All the following on Red Hat 8 running on a PC:

Mozilla Firebird 0.6 (aka "Phoenix" - preferred browser) - 1/2 second of a yellow car in the upper left 1/4 of the monitor image, followed by monitor being completely filled with a rapidly moving gray and white "television static" background.  Attempts at scrolling with arrow keys had no effect with this or any of the other browsers.  Turning off pop-up blocking and trying again had no effect.

Mozilla 1.4 - 1/2 second of a yellow car in the upper left 1/4 of the monitor image, followed by stationary gray and white "carpet" background. Interesting that Mozilla again gave a different result than Mozilla Firebird (aka Phoenix).

Galeon 1.2.11 - 1/4 second quick flash of a yellow car in the upper left 1/4 of the monitor image, followed by stationary gray and white "carpet" background. Identical results as Mozilla:  believe that Galeon is based either on Mozilla or on the same "gecko" engine.

Konqueror 3.0.5a-4 Red Hat - Yellow Cooper with entry material in top left half of screen.  Fill in with data, hit < submit >, went to second screen to register name and address, went to third screen which said <Thank you for registering with Peel . . . >

Looks like I may win that Cooper by default . . .

Interesting that Apple's Safari browser is based on Konqueror, the only browser that worked on this site.  I may try Konqueror first in the future on recalcitrant web sites.

Could this mean liberation from IE?

Sorry, weldigger, there arte standards, but not for browsers, just for code. Each browser can interpret the code anyway it wants, since the standards are sometimes a little hard to interpret. And since some companies want to do 'special' things, they create 'special' tags that only work in their browsers. Then there are bugs. Then there are the outright mistakenly interpreted standards. Then there are those who use certain tags for purposes they were not intended for. Then there are the M$ asp 'standards.' Then there are the text-only browsers. Then ...

And even the 'same' browser for different platforms may show things differently with the same code. I'm pretty pessimistic about ever seeing this mess cleaned up. Most people seem to care not about the standards as long as they get what they want for their project up and running. And if it is only viewable on a PC platform, so what! The government has made a few feeble steps into the quiclsand by creating 'viewability' standards. but unless the site needs to be viewed/used by some government agency, many don't care to fix those problems.

Since anyone with a text editor can 'create' a web page, don't expect things to improve soon. And then there are those who refuse to learn any code, relying on a WYSIWYG editor to do all the work. It would be more like 'You get what you pay for." except that these programs usually cost 10 to 20 times what a decent text editor costs! It's more like the inverse of that 'law.'

Oh well, need to step down off the soap box, it's raining and the vestages of soap are making my footing less than secure! Devilish2.gif

Hmmm, that was interesting.

Using IE 5.1.7 on 9.1 I got the image of the car, then a texture filling the small window, then it resized larger, I heard two car beeps and the window went back to the smaller size with the image of the car and the blocks to fill in info. Weird.

I filled in some info then clicked submit and got another page asking for shipping info, address, etc. I did not fill that in. Clicking on the rules got this page.

Seems to be just another way to gather spam and junk mail addresses.  dry.gif

Hey, David!

From deep in the "rainforests" of SE O-HI-O, I git wot Diana got . . .
QUOTE
. . . I saw a quick flash of a car picture, then the whole window looks like an animated mass of static.

. . . except I'm using NS 7.0.2 on my Pismo w/10.2.6. The Cooper was the first display, followed by the carpet . .  and more carpet . . . and more carpet.

Please, however, let me know where I go to pick up my new car!

The original post talked of this being a 'pop up' page. Not sure if the page has been changed since that post, but it looks like an ordinary page to me. There is a javascript that trys to keep the window a certain size:
CODE
<script>self.resizeTo( 700, 405 );</script>

And a lot of other scripts that make sure valid info has been entered.

Also see the line that has the 'beep' .wav file.

I suspect any problems are caused by the following line:
CODE
<div name="static" id="static" style="position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:100%; height:100%; z-index:2;" align="center" >

The 100% values apply to the 700 by 405 pixel window, z-index brings it to the front (I think the self.focus command would do the same thing). But the name= and id= part may be confusing to any CSS capable/compliant browser. The reason is that I see no link or input from any external style sheet. Nor is there any CSS definitions any where else in the page. And that's where the name and id would have been defined! Lacking the definitions, your browser may just dump the .gif to your screen. Actually, there is another similar line, again with an undefined name and id.

Also see some javascript looking at the browser type being used, not sure what it is doing except to alter the page for IE4. Shouldn't affect others.

That's my guess, anyway...

BTW, you guys have a free stay in the backwaters of Memphis, should you be coming back on I-40! E-mail me for phone number, directions.
