I cannot quit Safari. It's frozen!
« on: August 04, 2019, 02:13:46 PM »
I don't know what's going on.  Safari is stuck in my dock, it shows that it's open, but it's not opening, but I also cannot force quit even though under the apple logo, it shows Force Quit --> Safari. It never quits.

I went to Applications, clicked on Utilities and clicked on Activity Monitor.
I found Safari.app and clicked on that. It appeared on my dock, along with the frozen Safari icon, and it opened. Now I have, somehow, Safari in my Utilities folder and in my applications folder. The one in my Applications folder is not responding.

The one in my Utilities folder opens up like normal, but I'm unable to dock it and get rid of the one that is frozen.

Pictures are: message boxes, and the dock--the frozen Safari is on the left, and the one that works but won't stay in the dock is on the right.  I tried doing something from the activity monitor for the frozen Safari but not knowing what I was doing and trying to follow directions online, it didn't work.

Any help is always appreciated!
Thanks!
Sooz

I suspect the "Safari" in the Utilities folder is one that was accidentally Option-dragged there. Option-dragging an item in a disk to anywhere else on that disk, will create a duplicate item, on that disk.

Now, to un-freeze Safari...
Easiest method (if it works):
This may not work because Safari is already 'not responding', but it's worth a try. It should allow you to restart the Mac without causing Safari to start up right away
  • Shut down the Mac. Apple Menu->"Shutdown..."
  • Make sure to UN-check the "Reopen windows when logging back in".
  • Wait 6.82 seconds.
  • Start up the Mac.
Q1: Is Safari still running?

If this worked, problem solved. If not, there are other things to try, but first...
I'm confused by the following:

I went to Applications, clicked on Utilities and clicked on Activity Monitor.
I found Safari.app and clicked on that. It appeared on my dock, along with the frozen Safari icon, and it opened.
AM can be used to shutdown or stop processes, including an application. However, I've never tried to start or open a process.

Q2: Did you try using the "Force Quit..." item under the Apple Menu?

Hi, Jim,

So glad you're there to help!
I have my stopwatch out to time the 6.82 seconds, ha ha

As soon as I post this, I'll do as you suggested, and will be surprised if it works--seems that's something I already tried but what the heck.

Yes, I did try using Force Quit under the apple.

Cross fingers!

Ok, good news!  I followed instructions and .... Safari has quit I guess because it's no longer on the Dock...at all.

Now, is it where it's supposed to be in Utilities or Applications? How do I get it back on the dock?

I'll have to check back in about an hour as I told DH that I would run an errand with him.

Hooray!!!!

That's OK, but many folks keep it there for easy access whether Finder is visible or not. I think it usually gets put there on any OS install, but you can certainly remove it if you want.

Be aware that, whenever any app is running, it will be in the Dock, toward the right side, between the two dividers (green ellipses in bottom image), if you have not asked for it to remain in the Dock. EDIT: Actually, you only have the two dividers if you have "Show recent applications in Dock" checked in Dock Prefs...

It should be in the Applications folder. First, however, please highlight (do not double-click it) the one in the Utilities folder. Now press command-I and send us a screen capture of the 'info' window with all the display triangles pointing down.

Does that 'info window look like the large image below or does it have the two items shown in the red boxes of the smaller image?

Safari used to be in the dock next to iPhotos.

There is a divider (no ellipsis) at the far right of my dock.  The stuff on the right side of that divider are the download folder and the Trash.

Here's the pic of the one I clicked in the Utilities folder with a screen capture...I did not do a down arrow on comments because that was a blank box.

I started Safari in the Utilities folder. If I start it up in the Applications folder, will I get the same results or how can I put it in my dock? For me, it's just easier to see it in the dock and double click to open it.

I started Safari in the Utilities folder.
Please stop doing that. :nono:  Please shut it down. The info window shows it is the current version of the app and it is not an alias. All that is OK for now, but it is not good to have two copies of most apps, especially ones installed by the OS.

After you shutdown/Quit the Safari you opened in the Utilities folder, please show us the Get Info window for the Safari that is in the Applications folder. No need to start it up, just single click the item below or above it in a Finder window list view. Then, with the up or down arrow key (whichever is appropriate), highlight the Safari icon. Again, don't actually start it, just highlight it so you can then command-I to get it's Info Window. Once you get that Info window, just capture the top section showing the version number, etc.

Oh, ok!  Sorry I was confused and didn't read for comprehension!

Here is what I get when I go to the Applications folder, click on the Safari icon, and get info...

OK! I'm positive that the version in the Utilities folder is a copy of the original that is in your Applications folder. Just delete the one in the Utility folder... if you can. Apple/the OS may complain that you aren't allowed to do that. If that happens, we'll work on something else. Gotta go, Grantchester is starting... ;)

Ah, Jim, thank you SO VERY MUCH for all your help and instructions!

I was able to delete the Safari that was in my Utilities folder, after I typed in my Admin PW (which I remembered!!! ).

I actually figured out how to put the Safari app icon in my dock! Woo hoo!

Again, thank you so much!
