I suspect the "Safari" in the Utilities folder is one that was accidentally Option-dragged there. Option-dragging an item
in a disk to anywhere else
on that disk, will create a duplicate item,
on that disk.
Now, to un-freeze Safari...
Easiest method (if it works):
This may not work because Safari is already 'not responding', but it's worth a try. It should allow you to restart the Mac without causing Safari to start up right away
- Shut down the Mac. Apple Menu->"Shutdown..."
- Make sure to UN-check the "Reopen windows when logging back in".
- Wait 6.82 seconds.
- Start up the Mac.
Q1: Is Safari still running?
If this worked, problem solved.
If not, there are other things to try, but first...
I'm confused by the following:
I went to Applications, clicked on Utilities and clicked on Activity Monitor.
I found Safari.app and clicked on that. It appeared on my dock, along with the frozen Safari icon, and it opened.
AM
can be used to
shutdown or
stop processes, including an application. However, I've never tried to
start or open a process.
Q2: Did you try using the "Force Quit..." item under the Apple Menu?
