Items copied from thumb drive show "clock"
« on: August 30, 2019, 03:54:08 PM »
Stupid title, but I don't know what else to call this. A friend shared a thumb drive with me that has photos needed for a memorial slide show. The drive was formatted on a PC and disk utility says it's MS-DOS (FAT32). I was able to transfer all the photos to my iMac, and I can open every single one of them without any problem, but I see this odd clock symbol on some of them (see attachment). Isn't that the symbol for "in progress"?

Since I have all the photos, I’m curious why I'm seeing this? Do I need to do any adjustments to system settings, or should I just ignore this?

That's what I've always called them... unless my wife has just made a lemon ice-box pie :yum: (no meringue, thank you very much!). Maybe it means the PC had a faster cpu than your machine? Perhaps it means the full-size file is still being downloaded, all you got was a low-rez 'thumbnail'. :coolio: Maybe you need to wind up your computer again!

I'll look around the house and see if I can find any thing about that icon... :inspect:

Thanks, xABD. I'm going to reboot and reload the thumb drive and see what happens.

Well, rebooting got rid of the "clocks".  :dntknw:

Great! Couldn't find anything other than the "in progress" function of the icon. I assume Apple is the only OS that uses that one, BTW. Apparently the function that displays the 'progress' display didn't get finished before the actual downloading did and was stuck in a state of suspended animation. Progress indicators, especially those related to files, are rarely accurate when dealing with irregular speeds and or multiple separate actions. Simply quitting Finder would probably have been enough to refresh/delete the icons.

My second recommendation would be to buy a new Mac Pro, preferably with at least 12 cores. :scram:

I'm hankering for a new iMac, but not in my budget at the moment (roof, gutters, post that holds up porch, and then ... we'll see.)
