moveing OS X on Dual 1 GHz to Ti G4

I just installed a new 60 GB hard drive into my Ti 500 MHz G4. Now I am installing OS X 10.2 which I will then upgrade using the 10.2.4 upgrader. My question is how do I move all my apps plus their registration code - that is all the extras that I have on my dual 1 GHz over to the laptop? In a previous thread, someone said to use Carbon Copy Cloner and just mover over my user folder.

Will that move all my apps plus preferences plus other stuff? Or, do I have to selectively choose what I want to move once I am in CCC?

Hook the two computers together with a firewire cable and start up the Ti in target disk mode.  You will see the G4 hard disk's icon mounted on the Ti's desktop.  I you drag anything between the drives.

You don't say what system version is on the G4, but I'm assuming it's not Jag, so I'd install Jag on the G4 first, using the upgrade options you should be able to keep your stuff intact.  If you are OS 9, then the installer will keep those apps in an a folder called Application(OS9).  All your classic apps will work as before.  You will have to re-install any OS X version of the classic apps you have.  Once you do that, you won't need the classic version anymore unless want to use them.  And once you have the G4 OS X updated, Target disk mode will work for most non-machine specific files like your Home (users) folder etc.

To Clarify. upgrade the G4 first.  If the new Jag CD disk is not v10.2.6, get the Combo updater, and use it on the G4. When everything on the G4 is done, then install a clean Jag system on the Ti and use the Combo if needed.  Now it time to use Target disk mode as said above.

Bill:  I wasn't aware that CCC has come that far since the last time I used it (it didn't work well then).  Does it now actually make a identical clone?  When I used it (v1), it was buggy, but you seem to know it better than I do.  I'll have to give it another try, so I can recommend it too.

mamaMoose:  Bill's advise seems more up to date than mine and would be much easier for you!!!  So I recommend his.

Two days ago I reformated my main drive and then used the latest rendition of CCC to transfer a mirror image of 10.2.6 to it from the slave drive. It did a complete and accurate job.

Let me make sure I understand, Bill and others.

I have upgraded my Ti to OS X (10.2.2) and am in the process via FireWire Target Disk mode (TDM) of using the 10.2.4 combined updater. But first I have to update to 10.2.2 so the 10.2.4 updater will work!!  (I am stoppng at 10.2.4 because my GCC laser printer does not work with 10.2.5 & 10.2.6) When that is done, I should, I assume, reenter TDM, and using carbon copy cloner TO clone my OS 10.2.4 partition on my dual 1 GHz (mainframe) onto the laptop.

Or should I do that immediately, since 10.2.0 is on the laptop? perhaps I do not have to go thru the 10.2.0 > 10.2.2 > 10.2.4 chain.

P.S. Changing out the HD was a piece of cake but I had to buy a Torx T-8 plus some rubber cement. The instructions from Xl8 Your mac were superb. The biggest problem was getting the case bottom so that all 8 screw holes were aligned properly.

My advice is still the same Tom.

Update your Laptop first.

Then Clone only the Users Folder from your Tower.

Let it overwrite the existing Folder.

This will include probably 90% of what you want.

See how that goes and what you still need.
